Combine cornmeal, sugar, baking powder, garlic powder, cayenne and salt in a medium bowl. Add jalapeño and onion; stir to combine. Whisk together buttermilk, melted butter and egg in a small bowl. Add the buttermilk mixture to the cornmeal mixture and stir to blend. Refrigerate for 10 minutes. Preheat air fryer and fry basket to 400°F for 10 minutes. Remove the basket; carefully line with foil and coat lightly with cooking spray. Scoop 4 heaping tablespoonfuls of the chilled batter onto the prepared basket. Coat the tops lightly with cooking spray. Cook until puffed and golden brown, about 9 minutes. Transfer the cooked hush puppies to a baking sheet and keep warm in the oven. Repeat with the remaining batter.
