These healthy mashed sweet potatoes owe their kick to the chipotle peppers. Want it spicier? Add another tablespoon to your mash. You can even use chipotle chile powder to punch up the heat--use a couple teaspoons instead of the full 3 tablespoons of chipotles in adobo.

  • Bring 2 inches of water to a boil in a large saucepan fitted with a steamer basket. Add sweet potatoes, cover and steam until tender, adding more water as needed, 25 to 30 minutes. Drain.

  • Pass the sweet potatoes through a ricer into the pot. Stir in butter, broth, chipotles and salt. Serve hot.


To make ahead: Refrigerate for up to 2 days. Reheat in a covered baking dish at 350 degrees F for about 25 minutes.
