How Carrie Underwood Sneaks in a Great Workout—Even If She Only Has 15 Minutes

Carrie Underwood is a Grammy Award-winning singer, entrepreneur, designer and mom of two little boys-so how in the world does she manage to stay as fit as she does? Luckily, her plan doesn't require insane diets or 4 a.m. wake-up calls from a personal trainer. Underwood simply tries to make the most of the little free time she happens to have that day, even if it's just 15 minutes!
While Underwood does love intense, hour-long training sessions to keep her famous legs in tip-top shape, that's not always realistic for her busy schedule. Underwood told PopSugar she is a big fan of tabata workouts to get her heart rate up quickly and keep that metabolism burning long after her 15 minute sweat session.
Tabata is better known as a type of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout, where one alternates between 20 seconds of intense work and 10 seconds of resting for four-minute periods-typically repeated three or four times. Underwood swears by a free tabata app that gives her various different exercises that work multiple muscle groups.
The great thing about tabata workouts is that you can do them anywhere-from your basement to the beach or a hotel room-and you don't need any equipment to torch some serious calories. A 150-pound person can burn around 170 calories in just 15 minutes!
Underwood told PopSugar her favorite tabata moves are jump squats, curtsy lunges, and step-ups on a large step or stable surface while holding dumbbells. We'll be adding those exercise to our workout routines ASAP!
