You don't have to cut out carbohydrates to lose weight. In fact, you should embrace them. Carbohydrates provide fuel for your brain and your body. But not all carbohydrates are created equal. Choose whole grains over refined grains like white flour and white rice. Whole-wheat pasta: it delivers two to three times more fiber than white pasta and pairs well with full-flavored sauces. Try it in any recipe you would normally use white pasta in. Another healthy carb is quinoa. Quinoa delivers high-quality protein, and one 1/2-cup serving has three grams of fiber. Try it for a warm breakfast, and top with raisins and cinnamon. Barley is packed with fiber. It makes a delicious side dish as a pilaf with butternut squash. It's also great in soups. Bulgur is a quick-cooking whole grain. It only needs to be soaked in hot water to cook. It pairs wonderfully with Asian and Middle Eastern flavors like tabbouleh. Wheat berries are the whole unprocessed form of wheat. They provide B vitamins, fiber and minerals, and are delicious as the base for grain salads or chilis. Here's one you might not normally think of: popcorn. Popcorn is a low-calorie whole grain, and a 3-cup serving has only 90 calories. For more healthy eating tips, come to eatingwell.com
