If you want to know how to eat to lose weight, first you figure out how many calories you need to eat to lose a pound. As for what to eat, our expert offers healthy food swaps to cut calories in your diet and how to burn 500 calories by exercising.
Hi, I'm Kerri-Ann. I'm here in the EatingWell Test Kitchen, and today I'm going to talk about how to lose weight. Losing weight is mostly about calories in versus calories out. You want to be eating fewer calories than you burn each day. The first stop is figuring out how many calories you need to maintain your current weight. You can do that by multiplying your current weight, in pounds, by 12. To lose 1 pound a week you need to shave 500 calories from that number each day. You can do that through a combination of upping your exercise and cutting down what you eat. Just keep in mind that you shouldn't go below 1200 calories each day. How do you cut 500 calories? In terms of exercise, walking or running 5 miles will burn about 500 calories. For food, here is some easy swaps and tips that can help you save 500 calories. Instead of a bagel, try an English muffin. Dip your salad in dressing; you'll end up eating at least half as much. Use hummus instead of mayo as a sandwich spread. Try using spaghetti squash instead of spaghetti in your favorite pasta dish. Remember, calories in need to be less than calories out. For more diet tips come to EatingWell.com
