Hi, I'm Kerri-Ann. I'm here in the EatingWell Test Kitchen, and today I'm going to talk about how to lose weight. Losing weight is mostly about calories in versus calories out. You want to be eating fewer calories than you burn each day. The first step is figuring out how many calories you need to maintain your current weight. You can do that by multiplying your current weight, in pounds, by 12. To lose 1 pound a week, you need to shave 500 calories from that number each day. You can do that through a combination of upping your exercise and cutting down what you eat. Just keep in mind that you shouldn't go below 1,200 calories each day. How do you cut 500 calories? In terms of exercise, walking or running 5 miles will burn about 500 calories. For food, here are some easy swaps and tips that can help you save 500 calories. Instead of a bagel, try an English muffin. Dip your salad in dressing; you'll end up eating at least half as much. Use hummus instead of mayo as a sandwich spread.
