Studies of the safety of irradiated foods seem to have been short term, with the longest lasting only 15 weeks. I suggest you look into the research coming out of U. of Wisconsin on the effects of irradiated food on the nervous system (I’m not sure that’s what they were actually studying, but that’s what the results indicate).</p><div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> EatingWell Editors </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-subtitle"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Irradiated food, composting &amp; a reader poll. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-standard"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_standard" width="310" height="310" alt="" src="http://bed56888308e93972c04-0dfc23b7b97881dee012a129d9518bae.r34.cf1.rackcdn.com/sites/default/files/so09_cover_310.jpg?1256233971" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-publication"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> November/December 2009 </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-related1"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-relatedtitle1"> <div class="field-label">Related Content Title 1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Related Links </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-relatedlinks1"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/food_news_origins/food_news/is_your_supper_safe">Is Your Supper Safe?</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/food_news_origins/people_perspectives/local_heroes/pushing_up_zucchini">Pushing Up Zucchini</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/food_news_origins/green_sustainable/curbside_composting">Curbside Composting</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/food_news_origins/seasonal_local/building_a_healthy_food_system_in_rural_america">Building a Healthy Food System in Rural America</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/food_news_origins/eatingwell_magazine/novemberdecember_2009_table_of_contents">November/December 2009 Table of Contents</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://www.eatingwell.com/food_news_origins/eatingwell_magazine/letters_to_the_editor/september_october_2009_letters#comments EatingWell Editors November/December 2009 Food News & Origins - EatingWell Magazine Thu, 22 Oct 2009 17:55:06 +0000 Penelope Wall 15190 at http://www.eatingwell.com Impressively Easy Dinners http://www.eatingwell.com/healthy_cooking/quick_healthy_cooking/quick_weeknight_dinners/impressively_easy_dinners <p>Other than the cat’s birthday, I don’t throw many parties. Impossible! My kitchen is noisy with echoes. With every move I make I hear the voices of every person who taught me something special—a skill, a trick, a principle—that has since become my habit. I think whether we acknowledge it or not, we all become cooks that way, heeding the voices (of a mama or grandfather, a wise aunt or a wacky friend) that take us back to other kitchens and other times. He realized then that the fruit’s “bounceability” was the perfect test to separate the good from the bad. In one of the studies, the people who drank fruit juice also exercised more and had more nutritious diets (e.g., ate less fat and sugar and more fiber), which suggests they may have other healthy habits, too, like eating properly sized portions. And, according to a study out of Duke University, meat, coffee and alcoholic beverages make them taste better. Researchers still can’t explain why, but they hypothesize that foods may alter saliva production and temporarily change taste buds in a way that makes cigarettes more or less palatable. So, this November 19—the Great American Smokeout—pour a tall glass of milk and help a smoker quit.</p> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Nick DiUlio </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-subtitle"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> A healthy diet may help you quit smoking. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-standard"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_standard" width="310" height="310" alt="" src="http://bed56888308e93972c04-0dfc23b7b97881dee012a129d9518bae.r34.cf1.rackcdn.com/sites/default/files/milk.jpg?1255027441" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-publication"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> November/December 2009 </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-related1"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-relatedtitle1"> <div class="field-label">Related Content Title 1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Related Recipes: </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-relatedlinks1"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/healthy_cooking/healthy_food_guide/milk">Milk Healthy Food Guide</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/healthy_cooking/healthy_food_guide/yogurt">Yogurt Healthy Food Guide</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/healthy_cooking/healthy_food_guide/cheese">Cheese Healthy Food Guide</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/recipes_menus/collections/15_minute_fruit_desserts">Healthy 15-Minute Fruit Dessert Recipes and Tips</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/recipes_menus/collections/healthy_apple_recipes">Healthy Apple Recipes and Cooking Tips</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/recipes_menus/collections/healthy_citrus_recipes">Healthy Citrus Recipes</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/recipes_menus/collections/healthy_berry_recipes">Healthy Berry Recipes and Tips</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/recipes_menus/collections/healthy_cauliflower_recipes">Healthy Cauliflower Recipes and Cooking Tips</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/recipes_menus/collections/healthy_winter_greens_recipes">Healthy Winter Greens Recipes and Cooking Tips</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/recipes_menus/collections/healthy_squash_recipes">Healthy Winter Squash Recipes and Cooking Tips</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://www.eatingwell.com/nutrition_health/nutrition_news_information/help_a_friend_quit_smoking#comments Nick DiUlio November/December 2009 Diet, Nutrition & Health - Nutrition News & Information Thu, 08 Oct 2009 18:44:52 +0000 Nifer 15046 at http://www.eatingwell.com Which Napkins Are The Greenest? http://www.eatingwell.com/food_news_origins/green_sustainable/which_napkins_are_the_greenest <p>Which napkins are more environmentally friendly—cloth or paper?
