My husband and I were broke, our car was dying and we were having trouble in our marriage. Stretched to my limits on even a normal day, I had decided to throw a Christmas party for 50 friends. </p> <p>As a person may do, when she’s young, I wanted to impress them with some very grown-up-seeming dish. So I took a cookbook down off the shelf that I’d never actually used before: one by Julia Child on the subject of entertaining.</p> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-author"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Joyce Maynard </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-text field-field-subtitle"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Author Joyce Maynard&#039;s humorous essay on making Julia Child&#039;s Chicken Melon for a holiday party. </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-filefield field-field-image-standard"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <img class="imagefield imagefield-field_image_standard" width="310" height="310" alt="" src="http://bed56888308e93972c04-0dfc23b7b97881dee012a129d9518bae.r34.cf1.rackcdn.com/sites/default/files/5210592_Cathy_Gendron_0.jpg?1383767375" /> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-content-taxonomy field-field-publication"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> November/December 2013 </div> </div> </div> <fieldset class="fieldgroup group-related1"><div class="field field-type-text field-field-relatedtitle1"> <div class="field-label">Related Content Title 1:&nbsp;</div> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> More Good Reads </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field-type-nodereference field-field-relatedlinks1"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/food_news_origins/people_perspectives/good_reads/place_at_the_table">A Place at the Table</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/food_news_origins/people_perspectives/good_reads/all_you_can_eat">All You Can Eat</a> </div> <div class="field-item odd"> <a href="/food_news_origins/people_perspectives/good_reads/berry_picking">Berry Picking</a> </div> <div class="field-item even"> <a href="/food_news_origins/people_perspectives/good_reads/food_for_the_heart">Food for the Heart</a> </div> </div> </div> </fieldset> http://www.eatingwell.com/food_news_origins/people_perspectives/good_reads/my_julia_child_moment#comments Joyce Maynard November/December 2013 Food News & Origins - People & Perspectives Fri, 01 Nov 2013 16:55:07 +0000 Stefan_20 279518 at http://www.eatingwell.com Let Them Eat Cake http://www.eatingwell.com/food_news_origins/people_perspectives/let_them_eat_cake <div class="field field-type-text field-field-original-title"> <div class="field-items"> <div class="field-item odd"> Let Them Eat Cake </div> </div> </div> <p>Because all three of my children’s birthdays fall within a month of each other, there was always, at our house, a time I thought of as The Birthday Season.
