Learn how we cut the fat out of a family favorite.

With a couple of easy tweaks you can consider even classic pepperoni pizza health food.

EatingWell made over this family favorite, boosting fiber with a whole-wheat crust, cutting fat and cholesterol with low-fat cheese, and using healthy toppings, such as low-fat turkey pepperoni and vegetables.

Read on for one family’s dinner makeover and then try one of our great healthy pizza recipes.

Family Meal Makeover: Pizza Night

Goal: A heart-healthy pizza dinner, low in saturated fat and loaded with fruits and vegetables.

  • Veggies first. Plan for and appease your child’s voracious appetite with a make-ahead platter of assorted vegetables.
  • Boost fiber by 50% simply by using a whole-wheat pizza crust.
  • Lower saturated fat and cholesterol by two-thirds when substituting low-fat mozzarella for regular cheese.
  • A fruit-based dessert fits into healthy eating and adds vitamins A & C, fiber and antioxidants.

Try getting a fat-free/vitamin added marinara sauce from a health store. I got one from Trader Joes and I swear it tasted better than normal marinara sauce! Then you don't have to mess with that pumpkin puree.
