Portobello & Beef Patty Melt

January/February 2008

Your rating: None Average: 4.4 (39 votes)

This diner classic gets a makeover by replacing some of the ground beef with finely chopped portobello mushrooms, which add moisture and flavor. We like a smear of pickle relish on top, but you could try chutney, mustard or hot pepper relish in its place. Make it a Meal: Round out the plate with Oven Sweet Potato Fries and Balsamic & Parmesan Roasted Cauliflower.

Yum! I made modifications because my boyfriend does not like strong mushroom flavor.
-1 cup portabella
-2 garlic cloves, minced, mixed into meat
-made my own rye breadcrumbs
-served with 2% swiss, spicy/sweet mustard, and organic onion rings
He loved them and we will make again! :)

This burger was very good and juicy I used baby bella mushrooms and low fat swiss cheese. I skipped the bread and made a side salad with lots of veggies .

This was really good, I thought. My husband is more into plain grilled burgers, so he didn't care for it much; this was sort of a fancy flavored burger (the thyme and Worcestershire sauce are prominent). As far as the mushrooms go, you can't tell much that they're in there as far as flavor/texture, but they sure make a moist burger! I certainly would not spend the extra money on portobello mushrooms again. If I make this again I will buy the less expensive button mushrooms. Also, I put grilled onions instead of the relish for a more authentic patty melt!
