Here is an easy way to serve a crowd a hearty breakfast before facing the elements for a day of winter sports. You can assemble it in the slow cooker in the evening and wake up to a bowl of hot, nourishing oatmeal. The slow cooker eliminates the need for constant stirring and ensures an exceptionally creamy consistency. It is important to use steel-cut oats; old-fashioned oats become too soft during slow-cooking.

I don't have (and don't want) a crock pot. I make steel cut oats in a Fagor pressure cooker and it takes only 7 minutes. I added the fruit after it was cooked along with some Stevia to sweeten it up a bit. I question what they're telling us the calories in a serving are. A cup of cooked steel cut oats is 307 calories so I don't know where they came up with such a low figure.


This is a great idea for a healthy, warm, ready to eat breakfast on a cold winter morning. I live alone and could not possibly consume more than one serving. I will try to refrigerate the rest and reheat on following mornings; or perhaps for an evening snack.


I make this every day. I used to do it in a mini slow cooker with a timer, putting it on for an hour when I went to bed, then 3 hours before breakfast. Now I use the timer on the oven and cook it for 2 1/4 hours at 250 degrees. It's the perfect breakfast. Much cheaper than prepared cereals, full of fibre, healthy, filling and delicious. I often add fruit or nuts, dried cranberries etc. but after experimenting prefer to add them after it's cooked or they go soggy. Apples would probably be OK cooked in.


I love oatmeal but I must say this was the worst. I used apricots & dried cherries, I don't know if it was the combo of fruit but it tasted like tin. Absolutely awful.


I love this recipe, super easy and delicious! I didn't have a ton of issues, I think it cooked for 7 hours or something, no big deal. I am thinking about adding some vanilla soymilk though, just a dash of flavor. For now I just add some before I reheat the oatmeal (made it for the week's breakfasts).
