Our updated Sloppy Joe takes lean ground beef and adds chopped cremini mushrooms and diced fresh plum tomatoes, all in a zesty sauce. Served on a whole-wheat bun, it's a hearty dinner sandwich that will please adults and kids alike.

READER'S COMMENT:
"This is so good! Instead of the ketchup/chili sauce I used tomato puree, added 2 cloves of crushed garlic, a liberal sprinkling of chili powder, a dash of cayenne, and just a bit of honey. Looking forward to the leftovers! "

To make this recipie even more healthy, I use ground turkey instead of ground beef. I think it is extremely tasty and good for you too!

This was AMAZING!!!! I used more tomatoes than it called for and used 96% lean beef. I served it with whole wheat buns, however I ate mine over a baked potato. I cannot wait to make this again!!!

I should have read more of the reviews before I made this. I would definitely omit or lower the amount of vinegar. I was drinking white wine so maybe that added to the fact that all I tasted was vinegar? But I would make this again and leave out vinegar. Also, I used a can of diced tomatoes and thickened it with cornstarch and water. My hubby and two year old are eating it up.

I LOVE this recipie! To make it EVEN healthier, I substitute ground turkey for the ground beef. You'd never know the difference. Perfect for when my summer garden is overflowing with tomatos! And, I get to make great use of my vidalia chop wizzard!

I used what another review suggested and used canned diced tomatoes, although I used the whole can, for a doubled recipe. No mushrooms since I'm allergic. I also added a bit of brown sugar to sweeten it. Try not to use too much Vinegar use maybe half of whats suggested. My dad, who is a MEAT MEAT MEAT person, liked the flavor of it. My brother, well he will eat anything, but he seemed to like it. Over all, good meal.
