Whether you're hosting a full house with all of your friends or watching the ball drop with your sweetheart, tasty appetizers and fun—maybe fizzy—drinks are in order. Try the recipes in our Easy Cocktail Party, or ring in the new year Italian style with a simple New Years Eve dinner. Spend more time with friends and family with our easy Make-Ahead Cocktail Party menu. After indulging on some healthier fare this New Year’s Eve, you’ll have plenty of room on your resolution list for more exciting adventures!

Make-Ahead Menu Planner

If you’re in the kitchen all night making fussy little appetizers, you’re ruining your own party (and not having much fun either). Use this planner with the New Year's Eve Cocktail Party Menu to help you make most things ahead, with just a little last-minute assembly and be a guest at the party too.

Up to 3 days ahead:

  • Prepare bruschetta through Step 3.
  • Make salmon bites through Step 1.

Up to 2 days ahead:

  • Make potato salad through Step 2.
  • Make mini muffins.
  • Make shooters.

Up to 1 day ahead:

  • Prepare cosmos through Step 1.
  • Make satays through Step 2.

2 hours before serving:

  • Make the tart.
  • Bring bruschetta onions to room temperature.

1 hour before serving:

  • Finish potato salad cups (Step 3); keep cold.
  • Finish satays (Step 3); hold at room temperature.
  • Finish salmon bites (Step 2); keep cold.

30 minutes before serving:

  • Finish bruschetta (Step 4)
  • Pour shooters into individual glasses; keep cold.

As guests arrive:

  • Shake cosmos to order.
  • Reheat mini muffins, if desired.

Healthy Side Recipes for Thanksgiving

The pear fruit flavor and crisp acidity of Estancia Pinot Grigio 2005 ($14) harmonize nicely with the sweeter flavors in the pear soup (page 71) and satay, while bringing out the layers of savory flavor in the potato salad bites and muffins.

Classy, with lots of black currant fruit and a slightly herbaceous note, Chateau Ste. Michelle Canoe Ridge Estate Horse Heaven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 ($24) really sings with the Mediterranean flavors in these nibbles, like the pesto tart. The oak aging gives plenty of body and richness to Robert Mondavi Fumé Blanc Reserve 2004 ($34), making it a really noteworthy on-its-own cocktail sip. Super acidity makes it the perfect partner for a variety of cocktail-party bites.
