Peppered Pork Burgers

“Sure, you've heard of hamburgers and even turkey burgers, but pork burgers? Topped with roasted red peppers and a homemade honey-mustard sauce, give these a try—they're lean, delicious, and easy to make!”

Ingredients

    • 3 tablespoons light mayonnaise
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • 1 teaspoon honey
    • 12 ounces lean ground pork (see Note)
    • ½ teaspoon ground pepper
    • ½ teaspoon paprika
    • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
    • ¼ teaspoon ground cumin
    • ⅛ teaspoon salt
    • 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns, split and toasted
    • 2 romaine lettuce leaves, halved
    • ¾ cup bottled roasted red peppers, drained and divided into large pieces

Directions

  • 1 Combine mayonnaise, mustard, and honey in a small bowl; cover and chill.
  • 2 Combine pork, ground pepper, paprika, garlic powder, cumin, and salt in a medium bowl. Shape into four ½-inch-thick patties.
  • 3 For a charcoal grill, place patties on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium coals. Grill for 10 to 12 minutes or until a thermometer inserted into side of each patty registers 160°F, turning patties once halfway through grilling. (For a gas grill, preheat grill. Reduce heat to medium. Place patties on the grill rack over heat. Cover and grill as above.)
  • 4 To assemble, spread reserved honey-mustard mixture on cut sides of bun tops. Place lettuce leaves, grilled burgers, and roasted red peppers on bun bottoms. Add bun tops, spread sides down.
  • Ingredient Note: Instead of purchasing pre-ground pork which can be high in fat, buy a whole piece of lean pork loin and grind it in a food processor.
