Classic homemade cranberry sauce gets a powerful flavor punch from red wine. As the sauce reduces, the wine gets syrupy, adding robust flavor with a bit of sweetness. Want to take it up a notch? Use port for even more sweetness and flavor.

  • 1 (12 ounce) bag fresh cranberries
  • 1 cup dry red wine or port
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 1-by-4-inch strips orange peel
  • 1 3-inch cinnamon stick
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Combine cranberries, wine (or port), sugar, orange peel, cinnamon stick and salt in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to maintain a simmer and cook, stirring often, until most of the cranberries have burst, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove the orange peel and cinnamon stick. Serve at room temperature or chilled.
  • To make ahead: Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.

I have never liked the cranberry sauce in a can. But I decided to take the plunge and try this recipe because so many in my family do like cranberry sauce. This recipe is amazing! It is super easy and it is delicious! It is definitely a keeper for the future!!
