For your next barbecue, try these Hawaiian-inspired sweet and savory burgers. They're made from lean ground beef and have bacon and crushed pineapple baked right in. Served with barbecue sauce on Hawaiian sweet rolls, they're sure to impress your guests.

  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • ⅓ cup canned crushed pineapple (juice pack), drained
  • 6 slices lower-sodium, less-fat bacon, crisp-cooked and coarsely crumbled (see Tip)
  • 1 pound lean ground beef (95% lean)
  • 6 tablespoons barbeque sauce
  • 6 Hawaiian sweet rolls, such as King's Hawaiian® brand, split and toasted
  • 4 leaves red leaf lettuce
  • 6 slices tomatoes
  • ¼ cup very thinly sliced red onion

  1. In a large bowl combine the egg, crushed pineapple and bacon. Add ground beef; mix lightly to combine. (Do not overmix.) Form into six ¾-inch-thick patties.
  2. Grease grill rack. Grill patties, covered, over medium-high heat for 8 to 12 minutes or until done (160°F) (see Tip), turning once. Spread top of each burger with 1 tablespoon of the barbecue sauce.
  3. Serve burgers in rolls with lettuce, tomatoes and onion.
  • Tips: To bake pork bacon, place slices side by side on a rack in a foil-lined shallow baking pan with sides. Bake for 18 to 21 minutes or until bacon is crisp-cooked Drain well on paper towels.
  • The meat may appear a bit pink after grilling. So be sure to use an instant-read thermometer to measure the doneness.
