  • 1 cup white whole-wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon apple pie spice
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup pure maple syrup
  • ¼ cup butter, melted
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1½ cups peeled and chopped Braeburn or other cooking apples
  • ¼ cup sliced almonds

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, apple pie spice, and salt.
  2. In another medium bowl, combine brown sugar, maple syrup, and melted butter. Stir in egg and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture just until combined. Fold in apples. Spread batter in prepared pan. Sprinkle with almonds.
  3. Bake 20 to 23 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Cut into 16 pieces.
