Here's a dinnertime warmer with a hint of spring's sweetness, designed for that day when you'd rather be outside raking the leaves from the garden, getting it ready for what's ahead, than slaving over the stove.

  • 6 bone-in chicken thighs, skin removed, trimmed of fat
  • 2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into spears
  • 1/2 pound white button mushrooms, thinly sliced
  • 6 large shallots, peeled and halved
  • 4 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary, or 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons white-wine vinegar

  1. Place chicken, sweet potatoes, mushrooms, shallots, garlic, wine, rosemary, salt and pepper in a 6-quart slow cooker; stir to combine. Put the lid on and cook on low until the potatoes are tender, about 5 hours. Before serving, remove bones from the chicken, if desired, and stir in vinegar.

Very delicious and tasty stew. My family and I found this dish to be extremely tasty. I did find that seasoning with some salt and pepper at the table was helpful, but my daughter [who does not like spicy foods] found it delicious. I did take revise the recipe based on some of the other comments, specifically; 1) sauteed the garlic, onions [instead of shallots] and rosemary in some olive oil before adding to crock pot 2) added a little meat rub to chicken, and braised it in a pan for a few minutes before adding to crock pot 3) briefly sauteed the potatoes in a frying pan with a little olive oil. I probably didn't need to do this, and maybe it helped overcook the potatoes, but it did add a little favor I'll definitely be trying this recipe again, as it's a quick, easy and delicious way to feed the family Pros: very hearty, seemingly healthy, delicious Cons: overcooking can turn potatoes to mush

Awful, bland & watery unless one adds many spices and thickener that aren't in the recipe I recommend everyone approach this recipe with an idea of what flavors they want their dish to take on, because as written, it comes out like stone soup with a slight chicken aftertaste. I made this as per the recipe and can say that it's a much better idea to chop the sweet potatoes into smaller pieces and add them a couple of hours into the cooking process. To make this palatable for my family (we all hated it initially), I added a little corn starch, cumin, garam masala, and curry. It was a hit after that, and even better the next day. Pros: Can be a go-to crock pot dish if altered to add actual flavor, Cons: Can't overstate how bland this dish is.

Easy and oh so yummy!! It was freezing rain today and I felt like something warm and comforting. I didn't have time to crock pot this, so I just made it on the stove. (Cooked it for 45 min on low) I saut+¬ed the veggies and added celery and doubled the wine and seasoning. I added the potatoes for the last 20 min of cooking, so they wouldn't get mushy. I served it over couscous. We all loved it and I can't wait for leftovers tomorrow Pros: Easy, yummy Cons: None

Bad taste I made this according to the recipe. It had a really bad taste. I leftovers which I will eat only because I don't want to throw away food.. Pros: Easy Cons: Bad taste

Nice flavor I used boneless/skinless chicken thighs with the fat trimmed off. The flavors from the various veggies blended well with the white wine to make a nice flavored broth. I would put the sweet potatoes in maybe 2-3 hrs before done so they don't get to soft. Pros: Tender chicken, nice blend of veggies, very nice flavor. Cons: Sweet potatoes a little to soft

Delicous! Oh, this was sooo good! I made this on a hot June day mostly for something to take to lunch (so sick of salad / sandwiches ..lol). I agree with those that mentioned adding the sweet potatoes later .. I added mine with 3 hrs cook time left and I think next time I'll try 2 hrs. Sweet potatoes cooked well (quite soft, but not mush), but I'd like them a little firmer. So yes .. do make this .. you won't be disappointed. Monica. Tasty, Warm and Comforting Chichicken and Sweet Potato Stew Instead of the white wine, I substituted 1 cup of organic,free range chicken broth. I didn't have white wine vinegar so I substituted Raspberry vinegar. I didn't have shallots so I substituted half a sweet white onion, thinly sliced. I decided to kick up the flavor with an all natural honey barbecue sauce (no fructose or corn syrup), about 2 hearty squirts or roughly 2 tablespoons. Put the crockpot on at 10:30pm and shut it off at 5:30am, 7hrs instead of 5hrs. It was awesome! Tasty, slightly sweet and smokey. Chicken was so tender it sometimes fell from the bone....so watch out for bones in the broth. Comforting food for a cold winter night after a long day at work. Enjoy! Oh.....you do need some quality whole grain bread for dipping. It is a STEW! Pros: This recipe had few ingredients and was easy to prepare. Cons: Since I didn't have some of the ingredients I made some awesome substitutions!
