This yellow split pea soup has fresh ginger to give it a bright flavor. Use the best ham you can find to get the most flavor.

  • 3 cups yellow split peas (about 1½ pounds)
  • 4 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 cups diced yellow onion
  • 1 cup diced carrot
  • 1 cup finely diced celery
  • 8 ounces ham, trimmed and diced
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • Freshly ground pepper to taste

  1. Place split peas in a medium bowl. Wash with cold water until the water runs clear; drain and spread in a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker.
  2. Add broth, water, onion, carrot, celery, ham, ginger and marjoram to the slow cooker. Stir to combine.
  3. Cover and cook for 5 hours on High or 7 to 8 hours on Low. Season with pepper.
  • Make Ahead Tip: Prep carrots, celery, ginger and dice ham; refrigerate in separate containers.

I used only chicken stock and reduced the amounts to fit a 4-quart slow cooker. Upon reading some of the critique re: cooking time, I set my slow cooker on high for 7 hours and the consistency is perfect. Great flavor!

The estimated cooking time was really OFF. After I read other comments about the peas being hard, I followed my non-crock pot recipe & soaked the peas overnight & rinsed them before putting in the pot. I also sauteed all the veggies in oil, & pureed them in my blender with a cup of the broth. I also chopped the ham pieces in the blender before adding to the broth & pea mix. The crock was on Low for TEN hours & the peas were still crispy. I turned heat up to high for 1 hour & they were still not soft, so I went back to low & the pot has now been on for almost 16 hours & the soup is great. It's just really, really hot. I would try the recipe again, but not in the crock put.

Good made some minor changes I loved this soup! I used green split peas as I could not fin yellow. I added extra split peas, garlic powder and pepper. I did not add ginger (I do not like it) or celery. I added extra onion and shredded the carrots. I also added a touch of cumin. I cooked on high for 5 hours and had to add about 2 more cups of water at about 3 hours in. Turned out great! Pros: Makes a lot, filling

Needs longer cooking time than stated! Made this overnight following the directions almost exactly (didn't really measure the marjoram or ginger--just eyeballed those). I put it in the slow cooker overnight on low for 8 hours + 2 hours on warm and when I checked it this morning, it wasn't at all the consistency of split pea soup. The peas still have crunch to them, so maybe it's just my slow cooker (cuisinart), but I'll be putting this back on high when I get home from work to hopefully break down the peas some more so it's actually a hearty, creamy soup. The flavor right now is fantastic though! Pros: Easy, healthy, tons of fiber Cons: Requires longer cooking than stated

Great flavor, but cooking time longer than indicated. Really flavorful soup. It did n' t cook to my liking in the crock pot on high for 5 hours, so I transferred it to a regular pot and simmered it on the stove until the peas were nice and mushy, about another hour. I also added 2 cups of diced potatoes at this point. I will make this again. Pros: Great blend of flavors. A change up ftrom your ordinary split pea soup. Cons: I cooked it in the crock on high, but the peas in thewere still pretty hard.

Fragrant, Hearty, Healthy -- Yummy! Followed the recipe with two exceptions, added 2 minced cloves of garlic & 1 additional cup of water with 1 tsp. ham base. After tasting, am glad I did NOT add a ham hock as it would have made it too fatty. Made this special for my Swedish mother who is receiving chemo treatments and need high protein healthy meals. Very colorful and flavorful! Pros: Super easy to make

Tasty and easy I really liked this, and it's even better the next day. I read through the comments and still didn't bother pre-cooking the veggies. However, I used a 1-pound bag of peas which wasn't quite enough. The recipe calls for 3 cups, and that's probably a bit more (it would be nice if the recipe was built around standard package sizes, but that's just me). I kept the other ingredients at their measurements, and threw in a smoked ham shank for flavor. It's very flavorful on its own. There was more liquid than I needed because of the amount of peas used, but when it cooled I was able to skim off nearly a cup of clear liquid and that helped. Pros: No precooking required Cons: Pay attention to how much peas you use

Love this soup!! I am not a pea soup fan and my husband is so I was happy to find a soup I would enjoy too. I use leftover ham bones to make it and it is always yummy. I love being able to make things in crock pot. Set it and forget it. You will not be disappointed. Pros: easy, flavorful soup

It's all about the ham Buy a high quality smoked ham, and that will really infuse flavor into the soup. Use all chicken broth (I like the Imagine organic free range brand) - do not use water in the recipe. Sautee the veggies in canola or olive oil before putting them in the crockpot. And if you really want to add some zip, put in 2 teaspoons of curry power when sauteeing the veggies. Also, add the ginger at the very end after the soup is done cooking. Lastly, green split peas are OK to use as well.
