Fragrant Hearty Healthy -- Yummy! Followed the recipe with two exceptions added 2 minced cloves of garlic & 1 additional cup of water with 1 tsp. ham base. After tasting am glad I did NOT add a ham hock as it would have made it too fatty. Made this special for my Swedish mother who is receiving chemo treatments and need high protein healthy meals. Very colorful and flavorful! Pros: Super easy to make
A couple of changes make this soup great! I changed it up a little bit. I put all chicken stock in instead of 4 cups of water. Also add the ginger at the very end when it is done cooking. I also added more veggies- put in whatever veggies you like.
Better than store bought! Delicious! I followed the recipe to the letter and didn't find it to be the least bit bland. I made sure to use fresh quality ingredients which makes all the difference when cooking. I will be making this again. Pros: Fast cost effective full of flavour
Edible but not worth making again... The soup definitely was not as creamy as the picture made it look and it was kind of bland. It's edible but I won't be making it again. Pros: Healthy Cons: Bland boring
I haven't tried this recipe yet but from looking at the method I can see why one reviewer found it bland. It would probably be improved by sauteeing the onions carrots celery in a saucepan (with some salt and pepper) before adding all the stuff to the crockpot. Sauteeing brings out more flavour/sweetness in veg's due to the browning. But if you just dump all the ingredients into the crock pot still raw you basically have boiled veggies -- no browning is possible in all that liquid less flavour is created. I had an EPIC FAIL with another EW recipe that just boiled all the stuff together (called Broccoli white bean cheddar soup I think. It was foul and a real waste of ingredients. On the bright side most EW recipes I've tried are keepers.
It's all about the ham Buy a high quality smoked ham and that will really infuse flavor into the soup. Use all chicken broth (I like the Imagine organic free range brand) - do not use water in the recipe. Sautee the veggies in canola or olive oil before putting them in the crockpot. And if you really want to add some zip put in 2 teaspoons of curry power when sauteeing the veggies. Also add the ginger at the very end after the soup is done cooking. Lastly green split peas are OK to use as well.
Love this soup!! I am not a pea soup fan and my husband is so I was happy to find a soup I would enjoy too. I use leftover ham bones to make it and it is always yummy. I love being able to make things in crock pot. Set it and forget it. You will not be disappointed. Pros: easy flavorful soup
Ok but I wouldn't make again I tried this to use up some leftover Easter ham. I used twice as much ham as the recipe called for and the ham was the best part of the soup. I found the cooking times to be accurate; my soup was done after 5 hours on high although I let it cook about an hour longer than that. I didn't taste the marjoram or ginger at all. Hubby and I added a lot of hot sauce to the finished soup to try to spice it up. Pros: easy Cons: bland
