Great recipe but inaccurate Recipe states 15 minutes to carmelize onions. Carmelizing onions unless the recipe author has some kind of magic trick takes MUCH longer. When I make carmelized onions it takes at least 2 or 3 times as long. Pros: Excellent flavors Cons: Understated cooking times
Made this tonight using fillets. I'm allergic to bleu cheese and didn't have any feta so I subbed in some crumbled goat cheese. I used a heavy bottom stainless steel skillet for cooking both onions and the steak. The onions were amazing and had just the right amount of sweetness to them. My husband doesn't normally like a lot of onion but he ate all that was on his plate. I did cheat a little with my steak. I used kosher salt and sprinkled it liberally on both sides of the steak. I got this tip from another blog about pan searing steaks. I got a beautiful crust on both sides and didn't have to add anything else to the steak. In fact even without the onions the steak tasted amazing! I'm so happy to have tried this recipe; I now have a go to recipe to make steak for one when my husband is deployed!
My new favorite steak I usually like steak with very little done to it. If it's cooked perfectly that's all I need! This preparation was so so so good though! I may never be able to eat plain steak again. Pros: true to cooking times flavorful fast easy
Delicious! I used just regular steak not fillets from my dad's farm-raised cattle. Followed the recipe as it is written. My husband doesn't care for onions but that's ok I ate all the extras! The flavors of the onions in the sauce and the gorgonzola cheese are to die for! Like the others said this is really restaurant quality! I will be making this recipe for years to come! Pros: easy
This was a fantastic meal! Added mushrooms to the onions a couple minutes before adding the broth---great addition! Served w/ the suggested garlic mashed potatoes and steamed carrots. Excellent! The onions with the meat---wow!
I thought the onions were poorly flavored and the steaks overdone. Sometimes keeping it simple is the best way to go. Saute the onions in a tad bit of butter add salt if needed and pepper add mushrooms at the end and grill the filets!
The steak had no flavor at all. I think next time I'm going to marinade my steak how I usually do it and add the onions and cheese. The onions had such great flavor and the blue cheese worked well with the steak and the onions. I just think there needs to be more flavor in the steak.
There should be a sixth star for Sublime! Well the steak anyway. The carmelized onions were too sweet for my taste. Next time no sugar just balsamic vinegar. I wrote about this recipe on my "Eating the Rainblow Blog" at http://superfoodsyear.blogspot.com/2010/05/barbecue-season-is-here.html
I am a vegetarian but I made this for my fiancee who loved it. I did a few things different. I got the bacon wrapped fillets and took off the bacon and cut them in half through the middle. I also added more salt and pepper to the top of the fillets when cooking them so they had more flavor. I added blue cheese on the top and put a little more than the recipe called for. This went over really well with my fiancee he was literally praising it the whole time he ate it. He liked it so much he ate all of it in one sitting. Very easy to cook and clean and apparently really tasty!
Delicious and satisfying! I followed the cooking times exactly and these steaks came out just the way we like them! Slicing 2 onions seems excessive but they cook down a lot and we ended up using almost all of them. The balsamic with the sugar makes such a yummy sauce. Cook the onions in the brown sugar until almost all of the liquid is gone. I made my steaks in another pan while the onions were cooking to save time. The gorgonzola cheese was a must! My husband hates it but I didn't tell him it was on the steak and he never even noticed. Pros: Easy to make tastes gourmet Cons: none
Amazing restaurant quality dinner I made this recipe this week for my husband and I. We are working on eating healthier. This recipe tasted better than most steak dinners in a restaurant. My husband said I could make every night. It was outstanding. We paired it with mashed potatoes and sauteed asparagus.
BETTER than ANY restaurant we've ever eaten in! I also made this for my husband and I last night. I omitted the brown sugar (I just simply forgot it!). My husband couldn't believe this was healthy! I paired this with bacon mashed potatoes (also from this site)...both of us felt like we were "cheating" on our diet! This dinner was way better than ANY steak place we've ever been to and living in Los Angeles we've been to all of the "best" ones! I used grass-fed hormone & antibiotic-free fillets and cooked them to medium-rare...I topped the steaks with Maytag Blue cheese (that was organic from grass-fed cows) and put the onions on top of the cheese-topped fillets & mashed potatoes. An absolutely DEVINE dinner! We ended it with chocolate truffle cheesecake (from this site also) which is TO DIE FOR!! Excellent dinner!! Pros: Very rich-tasting easy healthy
