This diner classic gets a makeover by replacing some of the ground beef with finely chopped portobello mushrooms, which add moisture and flavor. We like a smear of pickle relish on top, but you could try chutney, mustard or hot pepper relish in its place.

  • 3 tablespoons plain dry breadcrumbs
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme, or ½ teaspoon dried

  1. Position rack in upper third of oven; preheat broiler. Line a broiler pan with foil.
  2. Gently mix beef, mushrooms, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire, thyme, salt and pepper in a medium bowl until combined. Shape into 4 patties and place on the prepared pan. Broil until cooked though, 4 to 6 minutes per side.
  3. Meanwhile, toast bread. Rub each slice of toast with garlic.
  4. Place 1 patty on each piece of toast, top each with 2 teaspoons relish and cover with a slice of cheese. Remove foil and place the sandwiches on the pan; broil until the cheese is just melted, 30 to 60 seconds.

Juicy and so flavorful! This is one my absolute favorite go-to recipes. I'm not a fan of relish but it works so beautifully here. They balance is wonderful: crispy garlicky bread, juicy meaty patty, tangy relish, and just a little gooey cheese. I could seriously eat these every day. YUM. Pros: juicy, flavorful, filling, meaty

These were delicious and my whole family, even the 4 year old and 1 year old, loved them. I added a little sliced sweet onion on top of the burger instead of the relish. Yummy!

Yum! I made modifications because my boyfriend does not like strong mushroom flavor. -1 cup portabella -2 garlic cloves, minced, mixed into meat -made my own rye breadcrumbs -served with 2% swiss, spicy/sweet mustard, and organic onion rings He loved them and we will make again! :)

This burger was very good and juicy I used baby bella mushrooms and low fat swiss cheese. I skipped the bread and made a side salad with lots of veggies .

This was really good, I thought. My husband is more into plain grilled burgers, so he didn't care for it much; this was sort of a fancy flavored burger (the thyme and Worcestershire sauce are prominent). As far as the mushrooms go, you can't tell much that they're in there as far as flavor/texture, but they sure make a moist burger! I certainly would not spend the extra money on portobello mushrooms again. If I make this again I will buy the less expensive button mushrooms. Also, I put grilled onions instead of the relish for a more authentic patty melt!

This was so easy to make and the burgers were so juice. I did not use the relish either and just served it with a slice of reduced fat swiss cheese.
