Toasted nuts and fresh orange zest adorn these versatile green beans. Toast the nuts while you steam the beans and you have a polished addition to any meal ready in 15 minutes flat. Double it: Steam the green beans in a Dutch oven instead of a saucepan.

  • 1 pound green beans, trimmed
  • 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated orange zest
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • ¼ cup sliced almonds, toasted (see Tip)

  1. Place a steamer basket in a large saucepan, add 1 inch of water and bring to a boil. Put green beans in the basket and steam until tender, about 6 minutes. Toss the green beans in a large bowl with oil, orange zest, salt, pepper and almonds.
  • Tip: To toast sliced almonds, place in a small dry skillet and cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 2 to 4 minutes.

Healthy and Easy!!! We cooked this side dish for Thanksgiving and glad that I did instead of buying it from Boston Chicken. It's so much healthier and the toasted almonds plus the orange zest spice it up! Pros: Short list of ingredients!!!

Not for me! I did not like this recipe. There was no flavour what so ever, maybe it is because I used frozen green beans... I don't know but I just did not like it!

Delicious! I made these last night & they smell amazing! I was surprised the orange flavor wasn't that strong, since the scent was dominant. However, it definitely added something to the dish, because this was the most delicious green beans & almonds I've ever had.

This is similar to a green bean recipe that I fix all the time. I dropped the beans in a pot of boiling water for about 3 minutes and then drain them and put them in an ice water bath. I toast the almonds or walnuts or pecans, just whatever nut I have on hand at the time. Then I take the green beans and a shallott that has been sliced thin and put then in a hot skillett with 2 TBS of olive oil and 2 TBS of unsalted butter and saute them until the beans are tender crisp, about 6-8 minutes. I add salt and pepper to taste and toss them with the toasted nuts. My family loves this recipe and I am sure they will like the orange zest added to the beans also. Linda Gail Smith
