Make it VEGAN! I first found this recipe when I was trying to use weight. And it worked! Since then I've gone from vegetarianism to veganism so cheese was out. Here to say to any other vegans that the Field Roast Chao Creamy Original tastes even better on this than provolone! I promise you'll love it. No guilt! Pros: Tasty easy inexpensive everyone loves it Cons: None
Change your mind about mushrooms! I am still learning to like mushrooms this recipe is great and now I am more willing to use portabellos more often. I couldn't be happier with this sandwich quick satisfying deliciousand easy to adjust to a serving of one. Pros: Simple recipe quick satisfying
Love this sandwich I just made this sandwich today but I cut it down to serve one person. It is such a satisfying and delicious meal I could seriously eat it every day. The only minor change I made was I didn't want to open a whole carton of broth for just one serving so I used water. It is divine! I should have made two! Pros: Easy healthy cheesy Cons: None
This Recipe is a Keeper! What a great sandwich! I think I like this better than a regular Philly cheesesteak. It was a hit with the entire family including the vegetarians & carnivores. Easy to switch a few ingredients and make this vegan as well. I did cut down the dried oregano to 1 teaspoon and also used smoked instead of regular provolone. Bonus for anyone on Weight Watchers - this has 7 Points Plus on the WW 360 plan.
Easy and fabulous I used Baby Bella Mushrooms and I used spray oil to keep this sandwich lighter. I also to limit the amount of cheese consumed toasted my roll then placed the sliced cheese on the roll and broiled it until it was melted. I am a Vegetarian so I used vegetable broth and omitted the salt from the recipe. This is definitely a keeper in my recipe box! Pros: Healthy meatless recipe
Yummy and filling and healthy too. Full of flavor even though I used only water instead of stock! I figured it would be with so many already flavorful ingredients in it. I used a package of mixed mushrooms composed of mostly portobella baby bellas and shitake I think. Great tasting satisfying and healthful recipe!
Our Go-To Dish This is mine and my husband's favorite dish! We sometimes add a tabelspoon of worchestershire sauce and a good crank of black pepper. I tend to add more peppers and onions. This is the best on a great bakery crusty roll (think bolera rolls from the bakery section or a Turano roll). Nothing really soft. Then to finish it off we pop each cheese topped sandwich under the broiler! Unfortunately there's never any leftovers. Pros: Great meatless option. So flavorful!
Freakin Delicious! Only change I made was instead of the flour stock and soy I made it a bit more decadent and used a bit of philadelphia cream cheese. So delightful! Pros: That was just so super dooper tasty. Hit the spot on a cold miserable day!
So flavorful and filling This is one amazing sandwich. The portobello mushrooms are so meaty and substantial and the flavors of this recipe combine so well together. This definitely tastes like a guilty-pleasure sandwich but there's no need for guilt. This is being added as one of my go-to low-cal recipes.
Quick easy tasty! This was so quick and easy to make. I didn't change anything (except I may have added more cheese I didn't measure it). My non-vegetarian family loved it and even though I'm not really a fan of mushrooms I loved it too. The oregano was a little strong so next time I may do 1.5 tsp instead of 2 of the dry.
Yum! I can't resist changing things a bit so I grilled the veggies which added a nice depth of flavour. Then I combined the sauce ingredients in a pan and let them simmer- they got so amazingly thick! I toasted my bread added sauce veggies and vegan cheese. And that was lunch! Pros: Quick
Delicious Meatless Alternative This is a great tasting versatile dinner that should be fairly easy to prepare for novices and experts alike. It is low enough in calories to give you some leeway for experimentation if you want to kick up the flavor a bit. Pros: Easy Delicious
This is a yummy sandwich. I thought it could use a little kick so we added some pickled hot peppers & garlic which made it even better. Easy recipe to follow too (if you prep all of the veggies beforehand).
I came across this recipe while at work late and came home to try it. I was amazed! It was so good that I will gladly subsitute meat anytime! The only thing I did different was use low-fat american cheese and some garlic powder. Very easy recipe when your hungry and want something quick and healthy.
These are a big hit at my house even with my teenage son who would live on hamburgers if I let him. They have that nice meaty taste that portobellos impart and there's just enough sauce to give it some flavor without being too messy. I have never tried to spice this up though some of the suggestions sound good. But I'm happy with this recipe as is.
My husband and I loved this recipe! He has an aversion to mushrooms so I made a chicken breast for him but included a few of the portobello's and he actually liked them. Next time I think I'll go completely meat-free since I've warmed him up to the idea. The peppers turn out amazing in this!
WOW!!! My hubby and I are trying to forgo meat in an effort to be healthier and this recipe really caught my eye. Made it tonight with sliced orange pepper added shredded fresh spinach and skipped the flour- all we can say is WOW! Delicious yummy and we'll definitely make this one over and over again! Next time we'll add some sliced hot cherry peppers... Oh the possibilities!
Really good! For 2 of us I used 2 portabellos and added 1/2 a diced zucchini and 3 or 4 "Peppadews " which are a new friend in my kitchen. I also added garlic and fresh herbs (basil marjoram thyme) and a Tbsp Worcestershire. I browned the insides of the rolls in a pan before adding the vege mixture. This is perfect for a weeknight dinner. I served it with a green salad.
Really hearty and filling - exactly what I look for in a vegetarian meal. I try to cook at least 1 to 2 vegetarian meals a week and this is perfect for a quick weeknight dinner. Instead of the provolone I used 2% pepperjack cheese for a little kick. Served with oven roasted sweet potato and regular potato fries.
If you are going meatless this is THE recipe for Philly Cheese Steak. My husband and I are trying to eat less meat and this recipe was one of the best vegetarian recipes. It is very hearty and delicious.
My meat eating friends were tempted to turn vegetarian! We used swiss cheese and brushed the buns w/ EVOO and garlic powder before toasting them. We also added tomatoes and spinach and paired the sandwiches w/ baked sweet potato fries. Sooo good.
I made this to take for lunch this week. I divided the mushroom mixture among 4 dishes and then laid a slice of provolone on top of each. It reheated just fine in the microwave and the provolone melted perfectly. As I was cutting up the portobellos I kept thinking that there was going to be way too much for 4 sandwiches but the portobellos cook down quite a lot. However I did end up transferring the mixture from the frying pan that was overflowing to my dutch oven so that I could stir the mushrooms while they cooked. Absolutely delicious... and I didn't miss the meat at all. I'm a new vegetarian and recipes like this make it so easy!
My husband was very skeptical about trying this and typically finds my attempts at healthy cooking to be mediocre but to his surprise he really loved it (and I did too!). Great weeknight vegetarian meal. Definitely a keeper.
This recipe looks yummy. I haven't tried it yet but I think this will be dinner tonight. I am a vegan so I will use rice cheese instead of the provolone. For the person who commented on the chicken stock not being vegetarian.. I agree but most vegetarian recipes call for vegetable stock which can be substituted with chicken stock. I think this is aimed at the non vegetarians who want to eat healthy but may not have veggie stock in their pantries.
These were delish! Quick and easy:) I used whole fat provolone 1oz per sandwich and whole wheat bread. Next time I'll try the roll. I usually hate oregano and I was a little wary of the soy but oh wow everything blended together beautifully. I also used baby portabello because that is what was in the fridge. Just Perfect!
Amazing. Better than a restaurant. I made it with garlic fries on the side. I used regular mushrooms because portabello were really expensive and it was good. I also served it on a baguette. This helped keep everything together and compact. My partner strongly approved also so I'll be making this many more times
This is definitely a winner! One of my husband's favorite meals is philly cheese steak sandwiches and he said these were better!! I didn't have provolone so I just used colby and it made it nice and creamy. I also added in some spring garlic greens with the onion and it gave it a nice subtle hint of garlic. Will definitely make again for vegetarian nights!
Good enough I think I saw somewhere this sandwich tastes exactly like a Philly cheese steak. That's not true. However it's a great substitute. Just don't expect it to taste exactly like that. It's pretty good though! Pros: Easy a lot of food
The perfect meatless sandwich! I tried this recipe this week for the first time in preparation for May when I'll be going meatless for the whole month. The recipe was delicious and my husband didn't miss the meat one bit!
Delicious! I used green pepper instead of red an italian blend cheese slice instead of just provolone and halved the recipe. Even with half the recipe I still used less than half the required mushroom. The way the mushrooms were sliced my son was not a big fan but loved everything else. I never liked philly cheese steaks when I ate meat and I don't like mushrooms at all but I tried this recipe. I was absolutely satisifed. I used wheat french bread and cut it like a sub. It was the most delicious sandwich I have had in a long time and if you are like me and have a hard time finding great vegetarian recipes try this one! The sauce was so good. Pros: Easy delicious makes a lot. Cons: None.
