Dates, oats and dark brown sugar turn into a decadent breakfast treat in this creamy porridge.

  • 2 cups nonfat or low-fat milk
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/2 cup chopped pitted dates
  • 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts, (optional)
  • Sliced bananas, or apples (optional)
  • Plain nonfat yogurt, (optional)

  1. Combine milk, oats, dates, brown sugar, salt and stick in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring, until mixture is thick and creamy, about 4 minutes. Remove the cinnamon stick; stir in vanilla.
  2. Spoon into bowls and top with walnuts, sliced bananas or apples and plain nonfat yogurt (if desired).
  • People with celiac disease or gluten-sensitivity should use oats that are labeled “gluten-free,” as oats are often cross-contaminated with wheat and barley.

A long-standing favorite We have been making this since we got the printed magazine in 1998! Normally we add sliced, very ripe banana to all the ingredients at the beginning so they melt instead of being chunky. Pros: Creamy, filling and not overly sweet

I never thought I liked porridge but this was deliousous! I swaped the milk for almond milk and dates for prunes due to dietary requirements but its was just perfect with a little apple, chopped walnuts and teaspoon of Greek yoghurt, can't wait to have it again

delish! I made this for breakky this morning, and can't wait to make it again tomorrow! I also didn't have any cinnamon sticks, so I added a little bit of ground cinnamon - delicious! Will definitely add this to my repitoire, with little added sugar it was perfectly sweet too.

This recipe was super easy and quick and was a nice alternative to plain oatmeal. I was looking for a way to use up some extra dates and eat oatmeal pretty often. This recipe was really good. I didn't have any cinnamon stick on hand so I used ground cinnamon, and I always use half milk/half water for my oatmeal (cut out a few more calories), but those were the only changes I made. I would definitely recommend and will make again.
