Recipe Guidelines

Notes from the Nutrition & Food Editors

Recipes presented in EATINGWELL are generally created and edited to be consistent with the following nutritional goals:

Eat More:

* Vegetables and fruits
* Whole grains
* Protein from legumes, fish and fat-reduced dairy foods
* Food sources of monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids

Eat Less:

* Saturated and trans-fatty acids
* Refined grains and added sugars
* Salt and foods high in sodium

Eat the Right Fats:
On a daily basis, an average healthy adult may aim to derive 25 to 37 percent of his or her total calories from fat, but with less than 10 percent from saturated fat, 10 percent from polyunsaturated fat and up to 20 percent of calories from monounsaturated fat. Note that the balance of fats is a daily target and each recipe presented does not attempt to achieve this precise distribution of fat.

Common Sense:
Individual needs and tolerances vary, and these guidelines are not intended to replace personal advice from health-care providers. Healthy individuals may allow themselves food indulgences, balancing calorie intake and calorie expenditure over time. A combination of healthful diet and exercising to maintain fitness is a proven route to reducing the risk of many diseases.
