Vitamin B3, better known as niacin, is by far the best currently available agent for raising HDL, the protective form of cholesterol you want running in your bloodstream. According to Philip Ades, M.D., director of preventive cardiology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, “A dose of 1,000-2,000 mg daily can increase HDL by 20 percent or more, at a cost of just pennies a day.”

Ades cautions that high-dose niacin does carry potential side effects, such as flushing, and should only be taken under your physician’s advice.
