We talk with The Chew’s Daphne Oz about her philosophy on food, her favorite meals to cook at home and her 7-minute workout routine.

Every weekday Daphne Oz, author of The Dorm Room Diet (Newmarket, 2006) and daughter of Dr. Mehmet Oz, brings her health-conscious, clean-living perspective to ABC’s food-focused daytime talk show The Chew. We caught up with the busy 26-year-old to talk about how she stays healthy.

How would you describe your food philosophy?
I’m really committed to a plant-based diet from a health standpoint so I don’t cook a lot of meat. But there are food experiences I don’t want to miss out on. So on The Chew I’ll have a couple of delicious bites of everything that my co-hosts Mario [Batali] and Michael [Symon] make. I call my approach “meat for treats.”

What’s one of your favorite meals to cook at home?
Veggie chili. It’s one of those meals I make on a Sunday that lasts three days and it gets better every day afterward. I made it on The Chew the first week we were on air and, to this day, people are still telling me how much their families enjoy it.

Did you have an “aha” moment in thinking about how food impacts your health?
When I was 15 my dad took me into the operating room with him and showed me fat being squeezed out of a clogged artery. I realized that you have a choice: are you going to end up on an operating-room table or are you going to end up having quality of life? Seeing the effects of bad food choices and how preventable the result is really made a difference in the career I chose.

What’s one healthy thing you do every day?
In addition to my regular workout routine, I start my day with this 7-minute workout routine my dad does, that’s basically a series of yoga moves and push-ups. You literally roll out of bed and do the routine on the floor. It really wakes me up, gets my blood pumping and starts my day from a point of being very centered.
