Day 8: Treat Yourself (Occasionally)
Craving something sweet—or salty—but think you can’t have it if you are trying to lose weight? Actually, having a small treat every day may help you stick to your diet. Research in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association found that a small daily treat didn’t sabotage weight-loss efforts. Some under-150-calorie snacks to try: a 16-oz. skim latte, two squares of dark chocolate, ½ cup (non-premium) ice cream or 4 cups of air-popped popcorn.

“When I’m mooching around at the end of the day—it’s after dinner, the kitchen is cleaned up, I’m not really hungry (or I shouldn’t be) but I still want something, I try to remind myself of the small chocolate from the candy bowl at work that I already treated myself to earlier in the day or the glass of wine I had with dinner and enjoy them again in my imagination. Then pour myself some water or have a cup of tea and get out of the kitchen.”
Actionable Tip: Savor a small treat daily; it won’t break your diet and can help keep you on track.
