Higher test scores, improved learning, healthier eating habits—you can’t go wrong with a school garden, as dozens of studies have shown. A study of sixth graders in a garden program, for example, found they more than doubled their fruit and vegetable consumption. "The impact is so wide. It’s a sea change," says Kimbal Musk, co-founder of The Kitchen [Community], a nonprofit that aims to establish 180 school "Learning Gardens" around the country by the end of 2013.
