4 steak dinners for the price of 1
Steak dinners are a special treat in my house. In fact, my husband and I don’t usually buy steak to make at home because it can be expensive. So I save my steak splurges for restaurant meals.
But last week I was craving steak and trying to justify the cost as I stood in front of the meat case at the supermarket when I realized how silly my thinking is. I could make 5 steak dinners at home for the price I would pay for one meal in a restaurant.

These five steak recipes come in at less than $3 per serving—I can serve 4 people for less than $12. I’d definitely pay more than that if I were eating out—even at a chain steakhouse restaurant. And they’re healthier than what I’d get out too—these entrees all clock in at less than 400 calories per serving. Now I can splurge and save—that’s a real treat.
Grilled Steak with Pepper Relish: This recipe uses extra lean sirloin to keep it healthy. Toss colorful bell peppers in a balsamic-herb vinaigrette and grill them in a foil packet at the same time as the steak. Serve with corn on the cob. (Under $2.50 per serving)
Steak & Potato Salad with Horseradish Dressing: The classic combination of steak and potatoes gets a summer makeover with the addition of fresh grilled corn and green beans. Reserve some of the tangy horseradish dressing if you like and toss it with lettuce as a bed for the steak salad. Serve with a glass of cold pilsner. (Under $3 per serving)
Grilled Beef Tenderloin & Escarole: The tangy tomato vinaigrette and lightly grilled escarole is irresistible with juicy beef tenderloin. This simple, 30-minute dinner is great served with a grilled baguette. (Under $2.50 per serving)
Cube Steak with Mushroom Sherry Sauce: This satisfying supper comes together in just 20 minutes! Cube steak, which cooks quickly and is inexpensive, is pounded to make it tender. Pre-sliced mushrooms can save even more time on prep. (Under $2.50 per serving)
