I am so tired of government trying to tell the people what and how to eat and drink. This is suppose to be

Free country one where individuals have a choice. We have too many people now telling everyone what
THEY. Should do about everything. It is time for others to mind their own business. If they cannot do this
They should keep themselves busy with helping the hungry and homeless. I would hope the American
people are so fed up with all the politicians that should vote them all out and start over.

It is not the government's job to police our eating/drinking habits. We are not robots or puppets. It is up to the adults to decide for themselves and up to the parents to monitor what their children eat and drink. Sugar is not the culprit - it is people not doing enough movement (exercise) kids sitting way too much in front of the computer. You can't tax or legislate what people eat/drink or how much exercise they do or do't do. You can't legislate/tax people thin--It is just like smoking or drinking too much-You know it is wrong, but you continue to get drunk or smoke. It is up to each individual-And I am not one of those thin people I am about 25lbs overweight - I've lost 40-- but am not doing what I need to do to lose the rest and get back to my daily exercise. I wonder if they will tax the sugar in alcohol drinks-what about ice cream, cup cakes, fruit roll ups, cereals, and all those specialty coffees, lattes, etc?
With all the waste in the gov't now-give it a break on the sugar-and get on to the business of running this country and getting it back on sound financial ground. Do you realize they have never passed a budget for this year yet? So, where do they find the time to pounce of stupid stuff?

Why don't they just tax Mitt Romney and his $86K tax deduction of his horse; probably get more out of it than the pennies they are looking for from soda drinkers! And...yes, is that another way for Government to team up with large corporations to stick it to the little guy! Why is it we don't really do what is right for people.

You still have a choice to drink the soda or other sugary drinks. Are the numerous health problems that different from the health problems caused by alcohol? Alcohol is taxed.

THIS IS JUST ANOTHER WAY FOR OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO PAY FOR THEIR HEALTH INSURANCE, AT OUR EXPENSE. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE TO PAY FOR PARKING, MUCH LESS HEALTH CARE. IF THEY ARE SO CONCERNED ABOUT "US" AVERAGE PEOPLE THEN LET THEM START PAYING FOR THEIR RETIREMENT, HEALTH CARE, AND ALL THE OTHER PERKS THEY RECIEVE. I HAVEN'T TAKEN EVEN ONE VACATION MUCH LESS ONE THAT COST MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS PER DAY, WITH EVERY PERSON IN MY PERSONAL EMPLOY WHO ARE ALSO PAID WITH OUR TAX DOLLARS. OR HAVE MY DOG FLOWN IN A PRIVATE JET SO THAT MY GIRLS COULD PLAY WITH HIM. IT JUST MAKES ME SICK TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE OTHER MOTHERS LIKE MYSELF WHO ARE FACING THE POSSIBILITY OF THAT "BIG C" SURGERY ON OUR CHILD THAT CANNOT BE FLOWN TO THE VERY BEST SURGEONS IN THE WORLD AND MAY EVEN NOT BE ABLE TO EVEN AFFORD A WHEELCHAIR MUCH LESS A JET! WHEN WE ALLOW SOMEONE TO TRY TOTAKE GOD OUT OF OUR LIVES, SHAME ON US!

I agree totally with the person on the soapbox and with many of the comments! Government officials have to Stop trying to make up healthy reasons as excuses for taxing the middle class! Our liberty is being taken away little by little. People do not even realize it's happening! Wake up people! Stop voting these people into office...and if you don't Vote start now!

While I feel the government is too involved in so many ways, and the middle class is bearing the brunt of taxes, I do feel sodas should be taxed because alcohol is. The amount of sugars in sodas can be just as damaging to the body. And not just the sugar, but the sodium. I also agree that people really need education and healthy foods should be highlighted on tv/radio/internet - maybe tax dollars could be spent to do this?
