Week #3: Boost Exercise

By EatingWell Editors

No matter where you are now, you can become "an exercise person."

"I have been able to wake up earlier and get in my full hour of exercise in the morning for more than a month now. This is usually a run (outside if weather permits) or a warm up cardio plus weights. My trick is to sleep in my workout...

Increasing the calories you expend through physical activity is a key part of The EatingWell Diet. How do you make time for "programmed" exercise (think: walking for the specific point of exercise or hopping on the elliptical at the gym)? How do you sneak extra "lifestyle exercise" (everyday activity like taking the stairs instead of the elevator) into your day?

I sneak exercise in by walking from my car to work. It's a good 10 minutes back and forth and I walk up the stairs instead of taking the escalator. I also wear my "fit flops"(tm) which are said to simulate walking in sand for an added amount of working out the legs. I also bought "Earth"(tm) shoes which are sneakers (they have other styles as well) that are built to make you have perfect posture and stand straight and with every step you take you are walking on an incline which adds to the workout. Also, I was having a hard time last week trying to fit in exercise since I was on the road a lot and traveling. What I did was walk as much as possible and even when I was in Schroon River in the Adirondacks I walked around the river in knee-deep water to give my legs some more resistance. I missed having the rower so now that things have settled down, I am back on track. I also go up and down stairs a lot in my house. I usually am always doing something around the house. I don't sit much at home because there is always something to do and I can't sit still for very long anyway LOL! When I do sit is when I have problems because I then want to snack!! I love having the rower to sit in front of the TV with and actually exercise while I am catching up on my shows. This way I can watch TV without the urge to stuff something in my mouth.

Why doesn't somebody come up with exercise programs for those with physical disabilities and can't do "regular" exercise programs ... remember the disabilities can be more than just what most people "picture" as disabled. What about people who have chronic breathing problems like COPD or exhaustion from chronic fatigue or chronic pain from fibromyalgia and other types of disabilities. What kind of programs are there out for those people?

I write down 'gym' in my planner and I bring my gym bags with me on those days. I pack my bag at night and bring it into the building with me and hang it in my cubicle so that I can see it. That keeps me accountable to myself. Not to mention my co-workers see it and tell me how proud they are of me and that helps too.

I live 30 minutes away from my job. We have a gym on the facilities that I belong to. My daughter also happens to work on the same side of town that I work on. So on the weekends when I drop her off at work, I dress for the gym and go. Then I treat myself to a discount movie ($1.50). So it works out. I've done this for 2 weeks now and I actually look forward to it.

I work on the second floor and generally try to take the stairs anytime I have to go to another floor. I try to park as far away from the building as I can, unless it's raining.

Oh, and when I grocery shop....I pick out all the items that I have coupons for first. Then I start at the front of the store and go through each isle. I love doing that for some strange reason.

I have been able to wake up earlier and get in my full hour of exercise in the morning for more than a month now. This is usually a run (outside if weather permits) or a warm up cardio plus weights.

My trick is to sleep in my workout clothes! Yes! I wear my sports bra and tracks to sleep (not my shoes mind you!). Other things I do is fill up my gym bottle, keep my pre-workout banana on my bedside table and of course go to bed early.

Exercising in the morning makes me feel like I have gained extra hours in the day. Though I admit that I mostly live alone and have no kids/pets to care for. I don't know if I can continue this habit in the winter though since it is a short outdoor walk to the gym.
