There is no substitute for whole natural foods, a variety of foods, eaten in season. I read that xylitol, which is marketed as a natural sugar, is actually processed using toxic chemicals.

The bottom line is, most of the "nutrition news" that's put out there is backed by big corporations whose interest is only in making money and not public health. Your best bet is to eat whole foods and avoid processed foods altogether. The way we eat in this country has a direct relationship to the major killers . . . heart attack, stroke, diabetes and cancer. I recommend you read The China Study for starters.

I am very bothered by your comments in this article about all of the changes that we have made in the last three decades and that the studies by Lustig are a huge mistake from a public health perspective. What is a huge mistake is that we keep wasting time writing articles like this to begin with. All of the things you listed are an issue for our society. Sugar, fat, carbs, and the list goes on beyond things you mention, like chemicals and preservitives. The bottom line is that WE EAT TOO MUCH PROCESSED FOOD!!!! There is no way to make healthy processed food!!! People want their food to taste good, bottom line! If the food is processed and you take out the fat you have to put sugar in to make it taste better. If we take out the sugar we have to put chemicals in to make it taste better. The only real answer here is to EAT LESS PROCESSED FOOD! You are doing everyone a disservice by even publishing this article. The average person reading this without any nutrition background is confused and tries to make changes in their diet that cause them an inbalance some other way. Instead of pointing the finger at individual ingredients all the time, why don't you look at the real root of the issue. PEOPLE EAT TOO MUCH PROCESSED FOOD! Until we as a society start eating more whole food from fresh fruits and vegetables, you can write articles all day long, but it isn't going to make any difference. Try talking about something that matters and quit wasting everyones time!
