Q. Palm Oil vs. Palm Kernel Oil

A. They both come from palm trees, but there the similarity ends. Palm oil comes from the palm fruit, while palm kernel oil is extracted from the palm seed. And while over 80 percent of the fat in palm kernel oil is saturated, only 50 percent of palm oil is, making it easier on arteries. Palm oil's reddish or golden color is a clue that it also contains a fair amount of heart-healthy carotenoids. Some research even suggests that the fatty acids in palm oil don't raise cholesterol the way saturated fats traditionally do.

The other day I ate several candies and the next morning I woke with the lower quarter of my face swollen. After taking loraclear tablets I looked at the packet and it contained palm kernel oil. I was shocked. I never thought we would get this in our food in NZ. I have written back to the retailer and enclosed the packets. Palm kernels agriculture is environmentally bad as the people in Asian, notably Indonea, are clearing the jungle by slashing and burning. The smoke causes huge problems in neighbouring countries, eg Singapore. Jungle wildlife are losing their habitat. Palm kernel stock feed is bad for dairy cows. I have been told that slaughtermen know what a dairy cow has been fed on. Their teeth are eroded (must be painful) and there are pockets of palm kernel throughout the meat. Who is getting the meat? We don't know what it is doing to humans. It should be banned at least on environmental basis.

People - do the research and don't believe what is being force fed to you by big business (literally). Fat is not what causes heart disease, cholesterol, clogged arteries or the like. It is the ingestion of carbohydrates that creates the condition conducive to all these conditions. Eat as much fat as you like and eliminate carbs from your diet and you will live a much longer, healthier life.

Saturated fat is especially good for your heart and arteries and has a protective effect when it comes to cholesterol. I eat about 1/2 cup of coconut oil a day and fats make up 80% of my daily calorie intake (ketogenic diet) and ever since I started eating this way my cholesterol and related tests have never been more perfect, even at 50 years old.

Like I said, do the research yourself and don't believe what others have been telling you your whole life - it is all wrong.

palm oil and palm kernel oil are both fats. one is not "fattier" than the other. I don't believe the relative health merits of one over the other have been proven by scientific study.

All I have to say is that the production and use of palm oil is destroying the environment, starting with the rainforest. Quickest way to find out is to watch 'Years of Living Dangerously' narrated by Harrison Ford, but there' lots of information out there.

Palm kernel Oil is virtually identical in nature to coconut oil. The worldwide health and pharmaceutical industries have brainwashed us for almost 100 years that saturated fats are bad for us. First it was butter vs. margarine. Then, all the great transfat based cooking oils of the 1950-1990 that are now proven as a primary driver of heart disease and are essentially pure poison, causing untold inflammation, cancer and heart disease. Natural, clean or organic; the closer the product is to nature, the more I trust it.

palm oil or palm kernel oil both are dangerous to me. I end up in the ER if I consume even a minute amount . while this is uncommon it is not rare and is becoming more common all the time. no palm oil
, kernel or red is safe.
