Q. Palm Oil vs. Palm Kernel Oil

A. They both come from palm trees, but there the similarity ends. Palm oil comes from the palm fruit, while palm kernel oil is extracted from the palm seed. And while over 80 percent of the fat in palm kernel oil is saturated, only 50 percent of palm oil is, making it easier on arteries. Palm oil's reddish or golden color is a clue that it also contains a fair amount of heart-healthy carotenoids. Some research even suggests that the fatty acids in palm oil don't raise cholesterol the way saturated fats traditionally do.

Please read the Wikipedia entry titled "Palm Kernel Oil" for an objective explanation. While I know Wiki can be suspect and the References are not exhaustive, it can provide a broad picture. I am no chemist, but as a home cook I know that fats which are solid or semi-solid at room temp aren't what you want in your arteries. Many years ago, a friend in our food coop advised me to "eat local". While I'm not advocating giving up wonderful fruits, veg which must be transported from afar, we should all use common sense about a non-essential food group at the top of the food pyramid. However, if you're a hedonist, then go for it. :-}

Actually, palm kernel oil is healthier than palm oil, which is the reverse of what this article says. Palm kernel oil is much richer in medium chain fatty acids and similar to coconut oil. Both of these are heart healthy and have a neutral effect on cholesterol, as stated by the author of "The Coconut Oil Miracle," recommended reading.

really, all of the research that claimed saturated fats are bad are outdated, and failed to look at meat vs. vegetable saturated fat. So are we still just repeating things from 50 years ago?

Very confusing at times what I have looked at kernel palm oil seems good for you but not do good on the blood pressure and cholesterol. But palm oil seems a better choice?

Dear "orangutans" and "rainforest" lover, instead of caring about oragutans, we also need to feed humans here, the countries producing palm oil actually have high population of poor people.

..Um, you said "Indonesia is decimating it's own rainforest", which means that Indonesia is only destroying 10% of it's rainforest. Try 'destroying' or 'annihilating' instead.

Don't buy any product that contains palm oil from the Asian countries. Indonesia is decimating it's own rainforest which is habitat not only to orangutans but many creatures instead of farming the trees responsibly on already cleared land. I won't buy anything from an Asian country anymore because of their continued support of practices than are killing the planets tigers, elephants, rhinos, other big cats and I am sure species I have left out - they are abominable people for allowing this to continue.

Whoever thinks carbs are what makes saturated fat bad is...(if you have nothing good to say don't say it). Stick with unsat fats that your body can use never trans and very limited sat if you must.
