I think it is such a pity that many if not most people feel that organic produce is just too expensive for
them to buy---even if their families are small. However, we find that we eat less food if the food is
organic. Our bodies are more satisfied and we don't find ourselves "hunting" for something else to eat.
We feel that the "extra money" we spend on organic food keeps us from spending it at the doctor's
office. Also, our bodies reject that which is too sweet, too salty, and false. This is so important for the
children! Organic foods can also keep them and us from mood swings and depression. Actually,
we can trace any bodily discomforts back to something we ate. Then we know we don't need that
particular food anymore. Eating for blood type works for us also as does using herbs and foods for
any ailments we may manifest.
Some organic produce such as potatoes and bell peppers are not available where I live in Eastern Canada. Although a Produce Mgr. at a Whole Foods Store in Houston Tx noted when I was there in March of this year that bell peppers were difficult to obtain. Wondering if other consumers find that organic is not always available where they live in North America. Blueberries, however, are plentiful where I live, we just go pick them ourselves - we have lots in our freezer!
I disagree on buying conventional corn, while the corn itself might not have pesticide residues on the kernels, buying the organic supports the farmers that cause the enviroment much less harm.

I buy organic foods because I don't like the direction the farming industry is heading. When they genetically modify and chemically alter my food there is no way for me to know (because they don't label it). At least with Organic foods I know it's normal food. :)
I prefer to buy organic most of the time, but it isn't always possible. Generally the vegetables and fruits that are organic have better flavor and are better for me. but that is not always true. I am rather afraid of the sprays still used on commercial farms and in commercial orchards.
I live on Long Island. I try to buy as much organic produce, poultry and meat as is fresh and local - when shopping, I have two goals: one is to buy locally grown foods, and the second is to buy organic foods. I purchase a farm share every year in an organic farm, and so, for 26 weeks a year (I live in the Northeast), I get organic vegetables, and the occasional fruit. I also shop for organic chicken and produce at a local farm, and fill in with organic produce from a local farmer's market. What I find I have trouble buying is organic fruit, and pastured meat. My farm share fruit share is not organic, although the farm uses "responsible growth" means; it is difficult to find organic fruits on the dirty dozen list and pastured meats that are locally grown. My farm share includes peaches, nectarines, and apples. My closest organic, pastured meat source is a farmer in upstate New York, nearly 3 hours away who will ship via FedEx ground, but which is still a carbon footprint that I'm not totally comfortable with. Any suggestions? .
Certain ones. If the skin is thick enough, and something that does not get ingested (grapefruit, avacado), then I don't care to buy organic. But herbs, apples, lettuce ... definitely organic.
All of this organic speak.... how many people limit organic buying to just fruits and veg? It should be expanded to meats. I would rather eat a pesticide coated apple then a piece of cow, chicken, or pork that has been raised on corn and fattened to the point where if the animal, (chicken), stands its legs break; or, stuffed into a feed lot where it cannot move and is forced to stand who knows how many feet deep in fecal matter. Then to be processed and cleaned with chemicals that you can find in a cigarette.
Pesticide Alert, published about a decade ago, warned that sweet potatoes contained a large number of pesticides and should always be organic. Has their agriculture changed?
We prefer organic and are blessed to find more organic things in the various stores all the time. Bananas fruit yogurt salad dressings and even cookies.
Of course organic produce! Conventionally grown fruits and vegetables are laden with chemicals and pesticides, which overtime can lead to cancer. Organic produce also is more nutritious.
Organic produce: in addition to being more nutritious, it tastes better! Asparagus, broccoli, strawberries, carrots, no comparison. Eggs, milk, chicken taste better. Frozen sweet corn??? never! Yuk.
I always buy organic...if they don't have organic then I skip it. I think it is the single most important thing we can do for our health and I am more than willing to pay a little more at the store and less at the doctor!
Certain ones yes, such as apples, potatoes,and lettuce. I read an article from Men's Health about obesogens. Very interesting. It says that some of the chemicals / pesticides can mimic estrogen which can lead to weight gain later in life. The article is titled: Don't blame fast food for making you fat. It is more than calories in versus calories out.
We live in a rural area of MI with a large Amish population. We buy all we can locally and organic if it is available. No 'survey' will ever convince me that organic is the same as 'regular' when it comes to what I put in my families bodies.

I always buy organic when it comes to the produce that has a high risk for pesticides (orchard fruits, berries, peppers, etc.), but with the rest it often comes down to price & availability. Living in Canada, it is easier in the summer when local organic produce becomes available.

After reading all of the comments, I'd like to point out a few things:
Defining organic: When I say "organic" in relation to food, I'm talking USDA certified organic. I think that's what Eating Well's editors mean when using the term "organic" (?).
Many folks are commenting on the idea that organic should be less expensive because there is no cost for pesticides and herbicides.
There are two main reasons organic is more expensive: volume and labor.
Everyone knows that cost goes down when volume increases.
There is presently much more acreage planted in conventional food than organic. The more people eating organic, the more acreage will be planted organic and the price will eventually go down some.
Growing organically is much more labor intensive. Without chemicals keeping bugs and weeds away, people must often do the job. People cost more than chemicals. This is a fixed cost.
I highly recommend reading Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food" and/or "The Omnivore's Dilemna" for a fuller understanding of how food is produced, what our choices are, the true costs and how our choices affect each of us. The movie "Food Inc" is also quite informative.
I buy only organic produce 100% of the time. It's good for me and my family and it's essential for the health of the planet. Too many people don't realize the environmental consequences of using chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and as Michael Pollan tells us, the hidden costs. We pay the price eventually. It's not just our individual health we need to think about.
Thankfully, one neighborhood store specializes in "reduced for quick sale" organic produce. Most of the offerings are supermarket fresh; some a little less so. Always appreciated, this all helps me cut the total cost at the register.
I inquire where my food comes from if it is not part of the label.
I purchase organic fruits and vegetable when they are available and grow my own vegetables as much as possible. It makes sense to spend a little more, eat a little less, support growers and farmers that use sustainable methods that are humane, don't pollute the environment and preserve the world for future generations.

I believe that "organic' is too hyped up !!! They are definitely not as nutriciou or tastier than conventional. However, distinction should be made for the 'hybrid & engineered foods' to conventional too !!
Usually don't buy organic produce - i think it is way to expensive. Only buy it if they are out of the regular stuff.
How do I know that the products are organic? Who monitors these products?.
This reminds me when a TV network investigated restaurants offering caffeine free coffee.
Someone had a hidden camera anad was able to photo some help pouring regular coffee in the cups when the customer requested caffeine free.
Am I cynical about this. Absolutely.
An organic diet is expensive. I buy the things we eat the most in organic form. That would be fruits and vegetables. I also buy nuts as snacks and mix them with our favorite dried fruits. I also buy organic milk.
I buy ONLY organic produce & foods! When I'm out running errands, I take snacks & meals with me--organic, of course.
I find it crazy that the people who are saying who cares if our food is full of pesticides and chemicals. I guess ignorance is bliss for some. What about the PEOPLE WHO LIVE & WORK where these CROPS are GROWN and treated with this crap??? Those people SUFFER from the effects of the poisons that float in the air, in their soil and in their drinking water, they can't even grow their own produce because their own land is contaminated with chemicals. They get cancer and their babies are born with defects BECAUSE of these things! have you heard of Erin Brokovich? Look outside of your little box, there is MUCH more to it than your own body. Sure eating a few non- "organic" apples or for you sarcastic folks (apples grown without chemical pesticides, fertilizers, fungus treatments, irradiated, Genetically Modified etc...) isn't going to kill you today, but when you get cancer tomorrow you'll wonder what you could have done to PREVENT IT!! I also think more importantly is eating NON-GMO food....seriously people you can eat WELL and non chemically processed food, ON A BUDGET (whatever that means) and still eat naturally grown produce. I bet if those same people weren't buying expensive clothes, shoes and handbags and huge 4000 SF houses they could afford it easily. For me I'd rather spend MORE on my nourishment so I can stay healthy than worry about looking "trendy". (not to mention the savings of healthcare costs) Not that it applies to all of you but I do get sick of hearing the crap people feed their families because of their "budget" and them worrying about .35 coupons when they just bought ANOTHER $300 handbag or coupons for oreos and diet coke! :/ People need to start reading and researching this stuff...check out food inc., the omnivore's dilemma, foodmatters, the future of food, king corn, Nourishing traditions.
Technically "Organic" means anything that contains hydrocarbons and their derivatives.

i would love to buy all organic, but we have a family of five and a limited budget.
"organic" and humanely treated animal products actually rank higher on my list than naturally grown produce. i just can't take how the major commercial growers treat their animals, their employees or their customers and i won't help them do it if i can help it. as much as possible our milks, yogurts, cheeses, butter, eggs and meats, poultry and fish are organic, grass fed where appropriate/free range/open grazing/etc. definitely no hormones and no antibiotics...
as far as produce and other staples (flours, cereals, sugars, rices, etc...) i buy as much organic as i can, but i don't drive myself crazy over it. its probably half or less. in the summer its easier because i can do the u-pick thing...
looking forward to the day when i don't have to wonder/worry what my cheap food is really costing...
"Organic" has many broad definitions.
Chinese "moon soil" is organic.
My husband has just finished with his second round of cancer and I have completely changed the way I buy food. Nothing pre-packaged, no microwaved meals, etc. I buy veggies from a local co-op. It's really hard to buy good meat so I don't make too much of that any more.
I eat vegetarian food made from scratch. When I quit my high-flying career to live in the bush on a shoestring I stocked up on organic beans - four kinds. When I received the sacks from a health food store that sells them in bulk, guess where they were from? China! Do you trust that? I made the decision that if money got tight, I could give up organic. I'm nearly sixty, who knows what toxins have built up in my system. Why get all obsessive about how my food has been grown? And what about the rest of the world, where SOME FOOD would be nice? Basically no, because organic produce cost way too much. I do not understand why naturally grown produce is more expensive, than commercially grown.
If you mean grown without chemicals, why not say grown wthout chemicals.
My 8-month-old daughter gets all organic products, but her father and I only get it when it's on sale. It's just too expensive.
Yes, I would also like to know why organic food is more expensive. It seems to me that the farmers would be saving money because they are not spending it on all those chemicals, etc. Wish somebody could explain it to me. I do buy organic when it is available and looks fresh. The more I hear about the 'regular' foods out there, with the pesticides, the added hormones, the antibiotics, and all the other garbage that is being added to it, I just have to cringe. I do believe that's why cancer cases are skyrocketing and something needs to be done about it. The folks that are trying to tell us that all these additives are not harmful are, most likely, benefiting from people believing that statement. Common sense tells me that additives are harmful. So, yes, I am going to start buying more organic foods. And, if anybody out there does know why organic is more expensive, please let the rest of us know about it. Thanks.
When you are on a budget for a family, buying the more expensive organic is not a priority. Feeding healthy, filling meals is the priority and that can be done without the bank breaking orgainc produce.
It's expensive! And often you still have to count enormous food miles!!! I dunno....I feel morally compelled to do it, so just go on Monday's to my local small grocery and buy whatever very ripe produce is on the sale rack.
or just go to the farmer's markets...many of the sellers there are "organic" they just don't pay for the label.

I'm 100% organic dairy, 100% free range animals and organ fruits and veggies when possible.
my supermarket has an extremely tiny organic produce section of a few veggies- no fruits at all. I bought a red bell pepper from there once- it was a penny more than the "regular" and I have to admit the taste was better. But I'd have to drive 45 min to a Whole Foods, which isn't good for the environment. And then there'd be the extra gas money & the extra cost of buying from Whole Foods, which isn't cheap. I'm going to do some research over the next couple months and start a small vegetable patch on my backyard and attempt to grow my own organic vegetables. But for now I substitute organic when I can, if it isn't outrageous in price. Right now we go through 5 gallons of milk a week. I can't imagine buying that organic- couldn't afford anything else.
It does NOT cost that much more to buy organic produce, especially if you are buying things in season. It doesn't even make sense that stuff shipped halfway around the world is affordable to you but local organic is not? Whatever. These are the same people that demand top quality and pay top dollar for clothes, cars, TV's and all their other junk consumeables and throw-away stuff. They don't even stop to think about what they are feeding their own family.
People complaining they can't afford it have obviously never given it any real thought. I have 2 teenage boys, am recently widowed, and live below the poverty level. Since I quit buying "junk" food, i.e. brand name and/or heavily processed food, no microwave meals......we are making all our meals and breads from scratch now and avoiding frankenfoods, my grocery bill has dropped 35% every week. I buy organic milk (now THAT is way tooooo expensive!) and produce when it is available and I am still not spending as much on groceries as I used to. I can't wait to see the savings in my healthcare costs. Already my cholesterol and blood pressure have improved. You want expensive? Try living the rest of your life with chronic health conditions that result from your eating habits and what you put in your body because you THINK it is cheaper.
