EatingWell Taste Test: Natural Peanut Butters

By EatingWell Editors, December 2005/January 2006

Which is the peanuttiest? A panel of seven tasters reveal their answers.

READER'S COMMENT:
"why do you call these natural when salt and/or palm oil is an addiditive. I would think "natural" would b e just that, unadultrated ground peanuts with no additivies, e.g. Crazy Richard or Trader Joe's. "

Unfortunately, Adam's isn't QUITE a national brand. Cannot find it in the Colonies. Best brand I found in CT is Teddies. Had a friend bring us some Adam's when she came from CA for our wedding. My husband was totally hooked! He panicked when he reached the end of the jar so we bit the bullet and ordered 6 32-oz jars from the Adam's website. Expensive, but worth it!

As a big time peanut butter lover who sometimes craves the sweet, I LOVE Naturally Nutty peanut & other nut butters. Favorites are Butter Toffee Peanut Butter and Vanilla Almond Butter...a little bit of texture, but you'll never even think about buying Jif or Peter Pan again!

what about the commercial supermarket brands? Jif, Skippy, and Peter Pan are very good. Even supermarket brands from Kroger and Safeway are tasty. The all natural brands are way overpriced and too runny. The oil separation is a huge turn-off

I also wish all reviewed brands would be listed. Trader Joe's is national now, why isn't TJ's represented?

I am grateful for the reviews because now I've new brands to try. Will be adding to my shopping list.

To all peanut butter lovers, try Vermont Peanut Butter Company. They mix the most interesting potions... Mad River Mojo for example is a mixture of almond and peanut butter, dried cranberries, pumpkin, flax, and sunflower seeds. It is THE best ever, I use it in all cookie recipes and mix it in my oatmeal. Yum. And locally made in Stowe, Vermont.

I LOVE naturally more peanut butter with flax! It takes the best and has less fat!

I love Krema--very smooth, very peanutty. Nothing in it but peanuts, which is the way I prefer it. If you find a particular jar has too much oil on top when you open it, pour the excess into another jar and keep in the fridge to use in stir-fries.

Parker's Farm Natural Peanut Butter can't be beat.

Ingredients on the label used to read:
Ingredients: Peanuts, Salt, Love.
They removed the love for some reason. Some crabby person probably spoiled it, but I think it's still in there.

I've always really liked Adams 100% All Natural for it's deep peanut flavor. I wish these reviews would include the names of ALL brands tested, even if only the top finishers are listed in order. Was Adams peanut butter (a leading national brand) tested and found unworthy or just overlooked ??
