Easy ways to prepare heart-healthy oatmeal for breakfast.
Oatmeal is a satisfying, healthy morning meal. It’s high in soluble fiber, which may help to lower “bad” LDL cholesterol, and has a healthy amount of protein, both of which will help you feel satisfied. Plus oatmeal is a low-glycemic-index (GI) food—and research suggests that eating a low-GI meal before you exercise may help you burn more fat. For a boost of calcium, make oatmeal with low-fat milk instead of water. Then top it with your favorite fruit to add more fiber and nuts for (filling) healthy fats. Here are cooking instructions for the most common types of oatmeal, plus some of our favorite toppings. Use these instructions to prepare 1 serving of oatmeal or follow package directions. One serving of each type of oatmeal below is about 150 calories and 4 grams of fiber.
Don't let the 25-30 minute cooking time put you off steel cut oatmeal! You can speed up your morning STEEL-cut-oatmeal-cooking time by combining boiling water and the oatmeal the night before. Give it a stir, turn it off, cover the pot, and leave it on the stove top (my house is cool so I don't worry about it). In the morning bring it to a boil, turn it down to medium-low, give it a couple of stirs and...voila! In about five minutes you will have a delicious breakfast that will hold you well into the lunch hour! [The proportion is always four water to one steel-cut oatmeal: 1 Cup / 1/4 cup; 2 C / 1/2 c.; 3 C / 3/4 cup), although a little more water won't hurt; just cook it until it is the consistency you like.] Dee-licious! I do take the time to make old-fashioned stovetop oats at home each morning. I use 1/2 water and 1/2 skim milk. After oats have cooked for a couple of minutes, add 1/3 to 1/2 banana, 1/2 medjool date chopped, cinnamon, and 1/2 T toasted wheat germ. When oats are cooked, transfer to bowl, pour milk around rim, and drizzle w/ 1/2 tsp real maple syrup, and sprinkle with more cinnamon. Heart healthy, and very delicious! You will never enjoy instant oatmeal packets again!

You obviously forgot Scottish Oatmeal which is virtually a powder and cooks up tin 3 - 4 minutes. It is, to my palate, the best of the lot.
