Some celebrity chefs are banding together to help save endangered fish.

I have a little wallet sized card that I carry with me every shopping trip that shows which fish to avoid and which are okay. Whole Foods uses a system as well to mark all their fish price tags with various colored seals to let shoppers know the status of the fish they are purchasing. Still, some people will continue to eat whatever they want regardless. It's sad. We have done this to the planet yet don't always take responsibility. Glad to see this info getting out more.

I have printed out the list of fish to avoid and fish to eat and am taking to my local fish store the next time I go there. The owners have farmed salmon and sea bass all the time, and as good as they taste, they are now on my list of fish to avoid.
Knowing what to eat and what to avoid have changed my choices when I buy fish. I live in the US Virgin Islands and people come here thinking that they can throw a line in the water and catch an abundance of fish -- this is no longer true and very sad to say.

I've always been in love with Alton Brown. He's so admirable—and a good cook too! I love his show Good Eats on Food Network. Here's one more really good reason to feed my obsession. :-)

Farmed salmon aren't endangered - they are on the Avoid list because the farmed fish practice isn't good for the environment, plus they are filled with antibiotics.
The others are on there because they are being over-fished.
Some fish are on the list because they are polluted with heavy metals like mercury.

I suspect the fish he's holding is a Chilean Sea Bass...

How is it that farmed Atlantic fish are endangered and wild Alaskan salmon are not. Doesn't farming the fish by definition preserve wild stocks? Also what is the fish being held in the picture?
