Should the U.S. Ban Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)?

Three questions for biologist Lisa Weasel on GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms)

In 1996, U.S. farmers planted the first commercial genetically modified (GM) seeds. Some were engineered to resist herbicides so farmers could apply weed-killing herbicides without destroying their crops. Others contained genes to keep pest insects at bay. Today, about 92 percent of all soy and 80 percent of all corn grown in the U.S. is GM. These crops feed the animals that feed us, and they provide the bulk of our sweeteners and cooking oil. In fact, more than 70 percent of processed foods sold in the United States have ingredients from GM crops.

Yet GM crops remain controversial. France, Italy, Japan and several other countries have banned them because of health concerns and worries that GM crops may spread their engineered traits to other plants. Although company-funded studies and the FDA have labeled these foods as safe, a few preliminary studies suggest they are responsible for allergies, decreased fertility and super-weeds. “Genetically modified foods are a very misunderstood issue in this country,” says Lisa Weasel, a biologist at Portland State University and a member of Oregon’s task force on developing policy for biopharmaceutical crops. Her latest book, Food Fray: Inside the Controversy over Genetically Modified Foods (AMACOM, 2009), takes readers to the frontlines of the debate.

Monsanto sleeps very well with all the money they are making. Their motto is "no food will be grown that we don't own". They are making this a reality as fast as they can. Read Ty Bolinger's book "Cancer- Step Outside the Box. You will find out just how corrupt the whole system is. Monsanto gets their way with the FDA because the top execs at the FDA used to work for Monsanto. FDA passes Monsanto products without testing or fake tests. 3/4 of Monsanto's political campaign money goes to Republicans. The pharmaceudical (big pharma) companies are also in the tangled web. They give money to medical schools and tell them not to teach alternative methods of healing so they churn out graduates that only know treat the symptoms with big pharma poisons and don't go after the cause of the disease. If you look at the ads on tv you will see all Rx drugs you take for one thing will give you something else so that's great repeat business for doctors and big pharma. It's ALL about money. Start doing your own research on alternative healing. There are many many cures for cancer, even stage 4. They do not involve slash, poison or burn. Learn about alkalyzing your body. Disease can't live in an alkaline environment. That includes cancer. I research alternative methods and GMO issues at least 60 hours a week. I have learned how to shop at the grocery. You have to read EVERY single label and know what to look for. Yes it takes longer in the beginning but soon you will know what brands you should or shouldn't buy. Take the time to educate others. Tell your friends and even strangers you talk to in the store. It's the most important thing you can do for yourself and your family.

Once they are in the ground, it is done. The soil, water, etc is contaminated. Why we would knowingly do this to our FOOD supply is beyond me, oh wait, it is about MONEY. Monsanto (the company pushing through legislation) is a chemical company holding many of the patents for the GMO's. Their greed and selfishness is staggering. "I'm sorry" doesn't fix the problems that the GMO's will/have created.

We are paying our farmers NOT to grow food but we are perfectly willing to destroy, possibly forever, our seed supply! There is no going back.

I am just learning and researching this topic for myself and my family, thank you all for some great "food for thought" I am not anywhere near educated enough to comment on specifics however I will tell you this stuff scares the heck out of me! I agree that this is going to be a huge generational problem years down the road if not acted on now. I have learned with some self awareness and study I can be an educated consumer for my family and will continue to do so, I must say it is very empowering :)

Absolutely, they should be banned.....the FDA's "seal of approval" is no comfort to me. Look around, they are obviously NOT doing their job, and need to be held accountable. This is not about politics people; there happen to be people in all political parties in both ditches. We need to look at the facts, and at the raw, unaltered truth in every issue, not just this one. I'm not for depriving people in third world countries that desperately need better roads and better, more modern means of getting their produce to market so that they can provide for their families. We need to feed the world, not contaminate it!

If we trust studies on rats and mice concerning prescription meds, then why not observe the data on GM foods and the rats and mice. It 's sad that so many people depend on the government to protect us and they betray us over and over again b/c of the love of money. These animals are becoming infertile by the 3rd and 4th generation and many of the animals are coming out of their mothers womb mentally retarded. (excuse my political incorrectness) Do you think I want my children or grandchildren coming out that way. Hell no.We are affecting future generations by our actions. Grow your own food. Raise your own livestock and be sure of what you are eating. Even companies that produce organic goods don't always have the money to test their ingredients. They just have to rely on what their supplier tells them in good faith. Therefore, they can not always guarantee what we are eating. We each need to learn to sustain ourselves to some extent so we can rely less on mega producers.

Its a shame how our governement and corporate world works. Many people do not even know that GMO's are in the food they eat. Every ready processed food that has corn oil, soybean oil, high frutose corn syrup any corn or soy derivative unless mentioned organic are genetically modified ingredients. Corporates have worked with government to make sure that there is no requirement to label the ingredients as gmo, since they feared that no one would want to eat it. We are all ginueau pigs for them.

watch movie 'The Future of Food' its free on hulu.com (http://www.hulu.com/watch/67878/the-future-of-food). Also watch food inc.

There is a big initiative taken onboard by the non-gmo pro organizations and companies to get there products voluntarily labeled as non-gmo. Whole foods is one of them with many others. These companies are getting the products certified on there own and not waiting on the government to pass the law that labelign is required.
you can get more details on this project at www.nongmoproject.org
We need to start taking to our stores we shop from and also call the companies whose products we use to encourage them to get there products certified. I called Kraft and they do not have any product that is non-gmo.. I also called Frito-lays and they said that the corn in the natural line of products is organic hence non-gmo. But they might be using other oils and other ingredients that might be gmo. Unless they get the products verified for non-gmo and get the label on there products we will not know.

I was very disappointment when Obama recently approved GM (Genetically modified) alfafa. This is a grass that the cows/buffalos eat. By approving unconditional and uncontrolled planting of this GM alfafa he has endangered all the organic farmers. There is a very high chance of cross contamination.

Unless the people start raising there concerns nothing is going to change. Corporates will get there way for more profits. They do not care about human health. Join me and help me in actually raising awareness about GMO's. Talk to atleast all your friends and family and make them aware about gmo's.

I'm sorry, But GM crops are not necessary. They where designed to solve world hunger issues, but the problem is not the amount of food being produced it is the availability of the food to the hungry. Just because a farmer grows more corn doesn't mean that a poor man will have the money to buy it. We are producing surplus at the base level, which dropped the prices, yes, but allot of farmers went out of business because of it and that was the real reason for the depression we are just now starting to recover from. So ask yourself does they have any reason to use these GM crops. And for all of the farmers out there if a field is rotated properly and you don’t only do the same crop every year you wouldn’t need to use all of the pest controls and fertilizers that you do because there will not be a build up of pests from year to year and the land would not be burnt out saving you money in the long run.

Read "Seeds of Deception" by Jeffrey Smith. Log onto Dr Mercola.com and google GMO. See the documentary "the World according to Monsanto" Talk to the farmeres who have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars on seeds that they cannot use again and tons of Round-up which has been proven to cause MS. How can you label sweet corn as one of the clean vegetabeles, which by the way is a grain.
Enquire about who the directors are at FDA and where were they employed previously.
In other words do some investigation before suggesting that there is not test data. Back in the early 90's the FDA had test data that GMO products were unsafe and should not be introduced to the food chain. George Bush Sr overrode the FDA decision and pushed it through. The true test will be another generation away at which time it will be too late. It will go down in history as one of the greatest crimes against humanity and out Mother Earth. I have never had allergies until around the year 2000, when GMO came full fledged into our area. Read about the workers in the fields of India working with GMO cotton and their illnesses. Read about there suicides as they are losing their farms over failed GMO crops. Wake up!

I don't believe that they should necessarily be banned, but I DO believe that ALL products containing genetically modified organisms should be labeled as such, with further details made available should you care to research it. Consumers cannot make informed choices unless the information is made available to them. Currently, we are at the whims of what businesses want to make available (and what they choose to tell us) rather than what we want to buy.
