I want to (and know I should) exercise more. I actually like to run—but I often go long stretches (weeks!) without running. I find all kinds of excuses to skip exercise: the baby didn’t sleep well, I’m too busy at work to break at lunch, I’m too hungry at dinner to run first. You know what I mean, life stuff.
When I get into these ruts, I try to remind myself that even President Obama makes time to exercise. But that sort of reasoning doesn’t really get me out the door on a run.
What does work for me? These are my 4 tricks to get myself to exercise more:

My biggest diet downfall is tortilla chips. The problem isn’t so much that chips are unhealthy, it’s that I don’t stop at one serving. Or two. For a time, I tried to keep the chips out of the house but that wasn’t really fair to my husband, Jon. Plus, I missed them.
So I figured out that I could enjoy my chips without going overboard by pairing them with yummy, low-cal Chile Con Queso. It may seem counterintuitive that eating more would help me to eat less. But it works for me—and here’s why: Grabbing a couple of chips on the fly always results in eating a few more chips… until I’ve eaten three or four times what I should. But my chip-and-dip combo is a legitimate “snack.” I measure out a portion of the dip—a quarter cup, which has only 84 calories—and count out one serving of chips....read full post »
There are plenty of people in Vermont who relish the freezing temperatures and snow that come during the heart of winter. I’m not one. While my friends are out skiing, I’m in the kitchen, dressed in my most comfortable sweatshirt, looking for new dinner recipes that are low in calories, but big in flavor.
Here are my 5 all-time favorite winter recipes (all with less than 370 calories and packed with lean protein and fiber-rich vegetables):

Diet fads may come and go, but I know that I can always stay at a healthy weight by eating foods I love. I try to make most of my food choices smart ones but there’s a place for pizza in every diet plan. No food is off limits as long as I keep calories in mind (and remember that 3,500 extra ones will cause me to gain a pound).

Few things feed a hungry football-watching crowd as well as chili. When my husband and I had a bunch of friends over to watch the playoffs a few weeks ago, we made two chili recipes—a vegetarian chili and a hearty, meaty chili. Both chilis were a hit and the ideal meal to serve at this type of gathering because there were only two pots to clean up afterward. Plus chili is loaded with antioxidant-packed vegetables, fiber-rich beans and (if it’s not vegetarian) lean cuts of beef and pork, which makes it a satisfying and healthy meal.
So this weekend for the Super Bowl, I’m going all out with a chili extravaganza.
