When I think of the best season to enjoy fresh fruit, winter isn’t the first one that comes to mind. But that’s the wrong attitude! Take oranges for instance—they are juicy, ripe and ready for eating right now in both sweet and savory dishes. And since they’re in season, oranges are one of the cheapest fruits per pound in the produce section (less than $1/pound versus more than $11/pound for blackberries).

Oranges are perfect for an afternoon snack (just peel and eat), but I love the sweet balance they add to savory dishes. Here are some of my favorite winter recipes with oranges:

Breakfast, for me, is essential. It gives me a much-needed energy boost for the rest of the day. (A few cups of coffee don’t hurt either!) But this time of year—having overindulged in too many rich foods over the holidays—I’m looking to cut excess calories from my day wherever I can. I head off winter weight gain with low-calorie meals, starting most importantly at breakfast.

I spent a lot of time in the kitchen during the past month baking, cooking and roasting up a storm. And some of what I made and ate—dozens and dozens of cookies, decadent desserts, super-cheesy appetizers—wasn’t the most healthful fare. I’m not ready to get on a scale just yet to see how much damage was done. But I am ready to switch gears and eat a little more healthfully. This week’s menu is made up of dinner recipes with 350 calories or less that are ready in 30 minutes or less.

With the stock market falling faster than a cold soufflé, many of us are looking at just how much our meals cost. And when we start trimming expenses, our food budget is often one place that takes a hit. An easy way to save money is to eat fewer meals out and make more meals at home. Plus you’ll have greater control to create healthy, delicious meals.

Our staff at EatingWell Magazine “shopped” online for ingredients and then calculated the cost per serving for main-dish recipes in one of our recent issues. The results seemed so amazing we even went back and double-checked the math: most of those main-course recipes cost less than $3 a serving.

’Tis the season for colds and the flu. If you’re like me, there isn’t any spare time built into the schedule to get sick.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was when, in the December issue of EatingWell Magazine, our senior nutrition advisor Rachel Johnson, Ph.D., M.P.H., R.D., revealed which 3 immune-boosting superfoods work—and what products aren’t worth the money.
