Recently, a friend who was eating with me appeared shocked as I spread full-fat natural peanut butter on my whole-wheat toast. Isn’t peanut butter super-fattening, she asked? It’s high in fat but that doesn’t mean it’s fattening, I told her, noting that gaining or losing weight, and body fat, basically comes down to balancing calories. Limit sodium. Ban trans fats. I know, I know. Keeping my heart in healthy form means paying attention to what I eat. And, let’s face it: I’m a nutrition editor, so I obviously like eating healthfully. But what’s with all of the negative talk? Can’t we just focus on what we can eat? What I should eat? Let’s hear something positive for a change. And that’s why I absolutely love the American Heart Association’s recommendation to eat fish, particularly fatty kinds like salmon, twice a week to get healthy amounts of omega-3s. My husband and I spent 10 days in Italy this past fall. And even though I felt like we were constantly eating and drinking, neither of us gained any weight and we both felt great. That’s because we were living the Mediterranean lifestyle to its fullest extent—we were doing plenty of walking, we were eating a variety of healthy, whole foods and delicious Mediterranean meals—in reasonable portions, of course—and we weren’t stressed out!

I was so excited when I heard about First Lady Michelle Obama’s new campaign to fight childhood obesity, called Let’s Move. As a mom, it’s easy for me to get behind any effort to help our kids be healthier. I know how hard it can be for parents and kids to eat healthfully in a world filled with busy schedules, a proliferation of unhealthy convenient food choices and picky eaters.

So while this new initiative will bring help for kids and parents, there are some things we can start right now at home, tonight, to keep our families healthier.

I love watching the winter Olympics. It’s so exciting to watch the world’s top athletes defy gravity, speed and the normal boundaries of human strength. As I watch the games and munch on my popcorn, I often wonder what Olympic athletes eat before and after their workouts. Power bars, peanut butter and jelly, eggs and toast? What do they put in their bodies to fuel their wins? (And although I’m already incorporating some proven natural fuel foods into my workouts, I think maybe I could get more healthy ideas on pre- and post-workout foods from these pros.)
