I can pass up an entire tray of brownies, no problem. Cake? No thanks. Cookies? Blah. Not interested. But put a plate of French fries in front of me, and I become a ravenous fiend.

I crave salty, fatty foods. And much like the folks on the sweet tooth side of the fence, my cravings can tax my diet, big time. So when I have a hankering for something salty, I have to strategize to avoid a major pitfall. Whatever I choose to eat has to satisfy my junk food cravings, but not derail my efforts to eat healthy.

I’m obsessed with smoothies. Maybe it’s the heat. Maybe it’s all the fresh berries my husband, Colin, and I have been picking at the berry farm. We’ve been going crazy with our blender—a handful of berries, some yogurt and a little ice. Cover, blend, and presto! A tasty, satisfying breakfast (or snack) to grab and go.

There are about 97,634,347 things I’d rather do after work in the summer than make dinner. (Gardening, hiking, swimming, running, biking and porch-sitting-with-cocktail-in-hand, just to name a few.) I’m sure you can relate.

Even so, we still need to eat. And while it’s so easy to grab a burger on the way home, I’d rather make something that I know tastes great, is good for me and will help me save the money I would have spent on takeout. Armed with these recipes—ready in just 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes—the excuse that there’s not enough time to make dinner flies out the door. I even paired each recipe with a super-quick side dish.

What can you do when your kid refuses to eat the very foods he needs most? As a nutrition expert, I know that the correct answer is to keep introducing them. As a mom, I know that technique alone doesn’t always work. Sometimes, when it doesn’t, the “spoonful of sugar” method—pairing the rejected food with something the kid likes—does.
