It’s January and many of us have weight loss on the brain. Perhaps you’re psyched about using the latest, greatest plan to slim down this “diet season.” Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of trendy, fad diets. They make ridiculous promises. Sure, you may drop 10 pounds in a week eating cabbage soup and little else, but once you go back to eating like a normal person you’ll gain it right back.

Now that there’s nothing left of the holiday cookies but crumbs, and the requisite holiday parties are no longer usurping your time at the gym, you might be getting fired up about the latest and greatest way you’re going to shed pounds in 2011. With a master’s degree in nutrition, focused in weight management, I know what you need to do to lose weight: Pay attention to portions. Plan healthy meals and snacks. Write down what you eat. Exercise. Effective, yes. But also booooooring. I’ll admit it. So why not just do the latest diet fad, the one that promises faster weight loss with less effort? Answer: The pounds will come creeping right back. The better solution is to embrace those arguably “tedious” diet rules and make them more fun and inspiring—and with cool, new tools.
