It’s officially summer—and swimsuit season. Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of crazy talk about dropping 10 pounds by, um, next week.
People know I have a degree in nutrition (with a focus in weight loss)—so they like to tell me their latest schemes for shedding pounds quickly. I hear about fasts, elimination diets (i.e., cutting out, say, wheat or meat, mostly to lose weight) and...read full post »
The other day, as I wheeled my cart down the soft-drink aisle to pick up some seltzer, my 3-year-old pointed at the soda and said (loudly),“Soda’s baaaaaaad.” First thought: I’ve never directly said that to you… but right on, little man! Still, I didn’t want my preschooler schooling all the people who’d come to pick up pop (as we call it where I grew up). That’s just rude. So I said, “Well, we like seltzer better, right?”

Lately, I’ve been noticing fine lines on my face and a growth patch of gray near my right temple. So when one of my colleagues suggested we write about “age-defying carbs,” I said, “Sign me up!” I’d read the recent Archives of Internal Medicine study to which my co-worker was referring and knew it didn’t provide evidence that I could save the time and money I spend to get my hair highlighted by eating whole-wheat pasta, quinoa, barley and the like. While cookout fare tends not to be the stuff that’s going to win any nutrition awards, you can partake and still walk away with your shorts buttoned. (Check these 7 tricks for staying slim through BBQ season.) It just means making the right choices—and, no, you don’t have to limit yourself to the corn on the cob and watermelon. Just skip (most of) the worst choices; the best ones are often just as satisfying.

A: I am a health journalist. B: I am a mom of two young boys.
A + B tends to equal an obsession with headlines on health, parenting or—even better—a combination of the two. But, lately, much of the news in the health-plus-parenting beat is downright depressing. Like the recent study published in the April 11 issue of Pediatrics that found moms of young kids exercise less and don’t eat as well as other women.
I can totally see how it happens: having limited time makes it hard to fit in exercise. (Read my tips for sidestepping fitness struggles here.) I can also see how not having much time for yourself might lead to seeking out treats that provide instant gratification, like, say, lots of...read full post »
