I'm just going to come out and say it: I really don't like to shop. And shopping at the holidays is really too much for me. The lines, the forgotten coupons, the midday hunger crash, the parking meter that needs more coins—I could go on.
Even though I was raised to be a good shopper (thanks, Mom!), as an adult I've found more fulfilling ways to spend my time (like cooking, for one). So giving a homemade gift from my kitchen is right up my alley. I get to shop at my favorite place—the grocery store—and spend time, perhaps even with my family, making yummy gifts I know my friends and family will enjoy. And I'll save some money too!

I’ve been spending a lot of time with my freezer lately. This time of year, the berry farm is beckoning with its fruit-laden bushes, my garden is overflowing with vegetables and my herbs are growing much faster than I can eat them.
With so much fresh food for the picking right now, I’ve been saving much of it in my freezer for less plentiful times (winter!).

This year Christmas will be a kind of old-meets-new tradition in my house. I’m hosting my in-laws. We’re going to wear ugly Christmas sweaters from the ’80s. We’ll probably listen to old records from my childhood—the Chipmunks, Fleetwood Mac, Bing Crosby. We’ll watch White Christmas and Elf (classics).
