Move over trans fats, there’s a new health villain in town: sodium.
New York City is on the cutting edge of food regulation once again, this time with a new target. First the City banned trans fats in food, then it required restaurants to post calorie counts on their menus. Now the New York Health Department wants to curb the amount of salt we’re eating. Today the health department released draft guidelines for a new (voluntary) health initiative to encourage food manufacturers and restaurant chains to curb the amount of sodium in their food. As a new mom I don’t have a lot of time for exercise. So when I do get moving I want to make the most of it. I love it that there are foods I can eat to help me get more out of my workout. (Find 10 breakfasts that help you burn more fat during your workouts here.)

Last year’s food trend predictions were all tied to the struggling economy: cooking budget-friendly recipes at home, dining out on the cheap and shopping for bargain ingredients. This year, the trends on the National Restaurant Association’s list of the Top 20 Food Trends for 2010 suggest we’re making decisions based on our health and the environment.
I’m glad that I can see the things I believe in—local foods, healthy meals and sustainable seafood—on this top 20 list, which is based on a survey of chefs across the nation. Here’s our take on the top trends, which we hope are here to stay:

My sister is trying to quit smoking for good. I know it’s really hard for her to kick the habit, so when I found out we were doing this piece in EatingWell Magazine that certain foods can help—or hurt—your chances of quitting, I knew I had to pass it on. Here’s the scoop:
According to a study out of Duke University, these 4 foods make cigarettes taste terrible:

It feels like eating, or making choices about what to eat, is getting harder. Since I started reading books like Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma (read our interview with him here) and watching movies like Food, Inc. (just released on DVD) that explore how our food system works from farms to our tables, I have a lot more to think about than just taste. Now before I take a bite, I consider where the food was grown and if the farmer used pesticides or hormones, among other concerns.
