Let me be the first to say that I LOVE chips. As a kid, I felt like a sandwich was incomplete without a few Classic Lays beside it (or on top...mmmm). I loved lemony Cool Ranch Doritos, peppery BBQ Utz, mysterious Cheetos. One year for Christmas, my stocking was literally full of cylinders of Pringles.
But I’m an adult now, with an adult’s metabolism. And there’s no getting around it: most chips are terrible for you. Many leading brands of potato chips have 10 g of fat in a “15-chip serving”—that’s a solid 16% of your daily value! And, c’mon, who eats just 15 chips?

My wife will tell you: I’m no morning person. The period of time between my alarm going off and that first cup of coffee is pretty much a fuzzy-headed blur for me. I love “snooze-surfing”—riding those 9 glorious minutes of sleep between alarms going off on my clock radio. Simply put: I’m not exactly at my shining best before 8 in the morning.
Still, I find time to eat breakfast every day. For many people like me—people who would just as soon stay up all night as try to wake up at 6 a.m.—this seems pretty amazing. “I just don’t have time,” they say.

It really pays to read the label when it comes to buying seafood, especially shrimp. Taking a few extra seconds in the supermarket aisle to figure out just what exactly is in your food and where it came from can make a huge difference for the environment.
Most shrimp are plentiful and reproduce quickly. But whether they are sustainably farmed or harvested is the big question. Both wild-caught and farm-raised shrimp can damage the surrounding ecosystems when not managed properly. Trawling for wild-caught shrimp can result in by-catch (other species that are caught in fisherman’s nets) and cause damage to ocean floors...read full post »
I was struck by this article on Yahoo linking to a Consumer Reports feature on the best and worst fast food (I'm sorry, "quick service") restaurants. The bottom line? Consumer Reports says think twice about slowing down for Burger King, KFC, McDonald's, or Taco Bell. The main reason: the uninspiring food and so-so service. Other major chains with relatively low scores included Arby's, Quiznos and Domino's.
Chains that got high marks were In-N-Out Burger, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Chick-fil-A and Papa Murphy's Take 'N' Bake Pizza.
It made me curious: when you absolutely MUST eat fast food, what do you opt for? Do certain chains seem healthier than others to you? What's your favorite thing to order?
I personally enjoy the...read full post »
Some people are passionate about pancakes, others are wacko for waffles, but when it comes to breakfast, I’ve always been an egg man. Beatles references aside, nothing makes me happier than hollandaise-topped eggs Benedict with gooey orange yolks or sizzling baked eggs dotted with bacon. Yum!
